Spring is a wonderful time to travel, especially for families or college students with a spring break. Luckily, you don’t need to leave the country to have an epic spring trip! I’ve teamed up with some fellow bloggers to share our favorite and best spring vacations in the US including options for lovers of the outdoors, those in need of a city break, national park goers, and unexpected places with incredible spring blooms, natural phenomena (like the aurora borealis), and more!

Best Spring Outdoorsy Destinations

1. Big Island, Hawai’i

Springtime on the Big Island means warmer weather and fewer crowds than other destinations. The average spring temperature ranges from 75-85°F, making it a perfect time to go to the beach and enjoy water activities like swimming and snorkeling.

One of the best things to do on the Big Island is visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to two active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Visitors can explore the park through hiking trails and scenic drives.

If you’re looking for the ultimate adventure, head to Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world (when measured from its base on the ocean floor). Mauna Kea is breathtaking, and if you’re lucky, you might even see some snow at the summit.

For those looking to relax and soak up the sun, the Big Island has some of the most stunning beaches in the world. Hapuna Beach and Kua Bay are two of the best beaches on the island, perfect for relaxing and swimming.

But the Big Island isn’t just about beaches and volcanoes; it also has a rich cultural history waiting to be explored. The Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park is an ancient Hawaiian sacred site that offers a glimpse into the island’s past.

Another popular activity to do on the island is to visit the coffee farms and taste some of the world’s best coffee. The high elevation, rich soil, and perfect climate are ideal for growing coffee beans.

Lastly, a trip to the Big Island isn’t complete without a day trip to Hilo. Located on the east side of the island, Hilo offers a more laid-back and authentic Hawaiian experience. You can visit local farmers’ markets, explore historic buildings and waterfalls, and enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine.

The best way to get to the Big Island is to fly into Kona International Airport, which has direct flights from major cities in the United States. Once on the island, renting a car is recommended to explore all that the Big Island has to offer.

We recommend staying on the Kona side of the island since this is the sunny side and has more activities and accommodations available. The drive from the airport to Kona is about 25 minutes.

2. Oahu, Hawai’i

Spring is a delightful time in Oahu, Hawaii. With the tropical climate switching from the rainy season (November-March) to the dry season (April-October), it is a shoulder season with occasional rainfall, but fewer visitors. Best of all, Oahu’s towering mountains are lush green and teeming with tropical foliage and the island’s many waterfalls are cascading with a steady flow of water. During the spring months, you can expect the temperature in Oahu to range from 68°-86°F.

Going to the beach is undoubtedly the best thing to do on Oahu. Waikiki Beach in Honolulu is a hotspot for vacationers, but the island’s best beaches are outside of the city. Lanikai Beach in Kailua, is one of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches, with white sandy, turquoise blue water, and a view of two tiny uninhabited islands. 

Oahu is also an incredible destination for snorkeling with sea turtles and tropical fish, cliff jumping, and diving. If you plan to partake in any of these fun water activities, be sure to add snorkeling gear and water shoes to your Hawaii packing list. Snorkels are not available for rent at most beaches, and water shoes are essential to protect your feet from the island’s sharp volcanic rocks that are present at many beaches. 

With tropical jungles that become even more vibrant after the rainy winter months, spending time hiking or exploring botanical gardens is a must-do Oahu activity in the springtime. Some of the island’s best hikes include the Olomana Ridge Hike, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike, and Mānoa Falls. Meanwhile, Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden is a free-to-visit botanical garden with scenery that is reminiscent of Jurassic Park. 

The majority of Oahu’s hotels are located in busy Waikiki. This trendy area of Honolulu is certainly worth exploring, but if you want to stay somewhere a little more secluded on the beach, check out The Kahala Hotel & Resort.

3. Juneau, Alaska

Alaska emerges from its long winter at the end of April and beginning of May. Juneau, the capital, welcomes visitors who usually arrive by cruise ship.

In May, the humpbacks arrive in Alaska from Hawaii and Mexico to feed in the marine-rich waters. With their arrival, it’s a great time to enjoy a whale-watching excursion.

If you cruise to Alaska in May, you’ll often see whales, porpoises, harbor seals, and bald eagles from your vessel. It’s also one of the driest months to savor the scenery. Expect highs of 47 F and lows of 35 F.

Alternatively, flying into Juneau International Airport allows you to stay longer and enjoy the city longer. The Four Points by Sheraton Juneau offers a convenient location downtown, close to shops and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Red Dog Saloon, where their signature drink is the Duck Fart. 

A visit to Juneau should include a trip to nearby Mendenhall Glacier. While the glacier is retreating and you can’t access its toe, you can enjoy a 1-mile hike to the thundering Nugget Falls.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers a variety of trails for every hiking ability. Choose from the easy Steep Creek Trail, which offers views of the giant icebergs on Mendenhall Lake, to the strenuous West Glacier Trail. 

Be aware that bears emerge from winter hibernation in spring, so you could encounter one at higher elevations.

4. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

The Columbia River Gorge in Oregon is one of the best destinations to visit in the spring! It’s one of the best places in the world to see and hike to gorgeous waterfalls, surrounded by the lush green landscape of the Pacific Northwest. It is a hiker and nature-lover’s paradise, with more than 30 waterfalls to discover in just a 50 mile radius!

In the spring, the snow melts from the mountains, making the waterfalls look simply bursting at the seams! Not only is the water volume magnificent, but the height of some of these waterfalls (like Multnomah Falls and Latourell Falls) is a sight to see.

The best way to get to the Gorge is via Portland International Airport in Portland, Oregon. The Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway is about a 45 min to 1-hour drive from the city. It is recommended to rent a car during your stay, or book a day tour that brings you back to your hotel at the end of the day. Stay in the city of Portland (The Ace Hotel is a unique one to try!) to get the best of both worlds – nature and city!

Come prepared with a raincoat and some warm layers for all the things to do in the Columbia River Gorge. Expect the weather to be cloudy and rainy during the spring months – average temperatures are in the 60s to the mid-40s.

5. Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada

For a picturesque spring vacation, consider heading to Lake Tahoe which is nestled right on the border of California and Nevada. Known as the ‘jewel of the Sierra,’ Lake Tahoe has breathtaking scenery, lots of outdoor adventure activities, great dining options, and several things to do together as adults or as a family.

Lake Tahoe is known for its alpine mountains which surround the lake, which is the 2nd deepest lake in the United States. Although it may still be too chilly to swim in Lake Tahoe in spring, there are many ways to enjoy the water. Take a walk along the East Shoreline Trail which walks along the coastline of the lake for incredible views, and consider taking a boat tour to the center of the lake.

Spring in particular is a good time to visit Lake Tahoe because you can get the best of both worlds — a winter and a summer experience. Many of the ski slopes remain open until June. There are fewer crowds in spring than in the summertime.

Head to Palisades Tahoe Ski Resort in Truckee to see a ski resort that was used in the Olympics. Whether you choose to ski or not, there is a quaint mountain village there with shops and great dining options.

Take advantage of incredible scenery by driving through Emerald Bay State Park and visiting Vikingsholm Castle, a Scandinavian-style fortress right on the lake.

The Marriott Grand Residence Club in South Lake Tahoe puts you within a 5-minute drive of Heavenly Village, a walkable mountain village where there are plenty of great places to eat,and a 15 minute drive to Emerald Bay.

6. St. George, Utah

Nestled in the southwestern corner of Utah, St. George is a picturesque desert town characterized by its red rock landscapes and pioneer heritage. St. George is the largest metropolitan area in Southern Utah and home to about 200,000 people, so there is a plethora of family-friendly dining and lodging options, from hotels and Airbnbs to some over-the-top vacation rental resorts.

While the area is best known for its proximity to Zion National Park, there is actually a ton of other things to do in St. George, Utah that make it worth visiting. 

For outdoor enthusiasts, beyond Zion there are also three incredible state parks that provide ample opportunities for recreation. At Snow Canyon, you can enjoy hiking or riding ebikes along trails lined with red rock cliffs and black lava tubes. At Sand Hollow, you can try your hand at wake surfing, paddleboarding, cliff jumping, or even off-roading on the sand dunes.  

For families, St. George is home to cool historical sites to explore. Whether you’re interested in learning about the area’s Native American and pioneer history or going back millions of years and literally following in the tracks of dinosaurs, you’ll find something to keep the kids entertained. St. George also has some incredible parks and playgrounds and a children’s museum that kids are sure to love. 

Spring is the ideal time to visit St. George because you can avoid the crowds and blistering heat of the summer. Typical springtime weather is sunny and 70s – perfect for getting outside and exploring the desert landscapes.

7. Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado, is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in the spring. During this time of year, the city reveals a breathtaking display of crab apple tree blooms, transforming the streets into a sea of pink and white petals. And with an average high of around 65°F and lows of 36°F, the air is still crisp from the winter months but warm enough to walk around outside!

A must-visit is the Denver Botanic Gardens, which is bursting with colors during the spring. Or, check out the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which offers a captivating blend of science and culture.

To get out of the city, consider a fun excursion to the top of Pikes Peak! This iconic mountain offers sweeping views of the area and is one of the few 14ers accessible by car.

In terms of where to stay, the Oxford Hotel has an excellent location in downtown Denver. Plus, the hotel offers all the amenities you need for a pleasant stay, such a rejuvenating spa experience!

Those interested in visiting can simply fly into the Denver International Airport and then hop on the affordable airport train, which takes you directly to downtown Denver. So, if you’re thinking of planning a spring trip, be sure to consider Denver!

8. Niagara Falls, New York

If you’re looking for a springtime outdoor adventure to remember, head to New York’s famous Niagara Falls State Park. As the weather starts to warm, Niagara Falls comes alive with eager tourists looking to take in the breathtaking wonder of the falls and the excitement of the surrounding area. 

Stick to the American side of the falls if you want to hike the trails of the Niagara Gorge, ride the Maid of the Mist boat (season starts in April), or walk beside the falls at the Cave of the Winds. 

Head to the Canadian side to take in the exciting Clifton Hill Entertainment District, zipline by the falls, or embark on Journey Behind the Falls. 

The Canadian side is also famous for its luxurious hotels that overlook Niagara Falls, with over a dozen options to choose from. The Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls is a top choice for many travelers, offering modern suites, a classy restaurant overlooking the falls, observation deck and free local shuttle. 

Throughout the spring, you can expect highs ranging between the 50s-70s, and lows between freezing and mid-50s. Niagara Falls State Park is a short 15 minute drive from Niagara Falls International Airport, 30 minutes from Buffalo, an hour and a half from Rochester, or 7 hours from New York City.

For spring travelers to the northeastern states, a trip to Niagara Falls is worth the detour, especially if never seen before. The falls are a wonder in and of themselves, and the attractions on both sides of the international border offer plenty to do and see for all who visit.

9. St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Spring is the perfect time to plan a visit to St Thomas because the weather is still gorgeous, there are no threats of hurricanes, and peak tourist season ends in March. April through June is the best time to visit before it gets too hot in the summer. This is a great time to be out in the water and enjoy the outdoors!

If you’re very active, then you’ll love taking a tour with Virgin Islands Ecotours. Their kayak, hike, & snorkel excursion is pretty epic and you’ll learn so much about the plants and animals you see. Snorkeling and island hopping in the British Virgin Islands are also popular.

Take the ferry over to St John and enjoy the beautiful beaches and hiking in Virgin Islands National Park – Cinnamon Bay is a favorite.

If you’re wondering where to stay in St. Thomas, Margaritaville Vacation Club St Thomas is a fun spot that has two pools, lots of activities, and is in close proximity to Red Hook.

You’ll fly into Charlotte Amalie and then need to take a taxi or rent a car to get to your hotel. Note that Uber isn’t available on the island, so you’ll want to bring cash for taxis.

Average temperatures in the spring range from lows in the high 70s to highs in the mid 80s (Fahrenheit). Perfect for a beach vacation!

Underrated Cities to Visit in Spring

10. San Luis Obispo, California

San Luis Obispo is an adorable college town located on the central coast of California, about halfway in between San Francisco and Los Angeles!

While San Luis Obispo is truly a year round destination, it is especially special during the spring months because of the events and festivals that happen when the weather gets a little warmer with an average high of 70 degrees and lows of 40 degrees!

Every year there is a film festival that happens during April on Higuera Street (San Luis Obispo’s main street) that is truly one-of-a-kind. There are also ample beer festivals, wine festivals and music festivals that happen throughout the weekends in spring, making it a destination you can visit again and again!

Regardless of when you visit, one of the best things about San Luis Obispo is that there is access to beaches, hiking trails, and wineries all year long! Some of the best wineries in San Luis Obispo offer incredible wine at a fraction of the cost of larger wine regions, making it both accessible and affordable for travelers from all walks of life. 

While there is an airport in San Luis Obispo, this airport only has regional flights offered which may limit the options to fly directly in if coming from the east coast or internationally. Thankfully, the major airports of LAX and SFO are only a 3 hour drive from San Luis Obispo, so one can easily get there via car.

In San Luis Obispo, the best place to stay is the Madonna Inn! This hotel has 110 completely unique rooms (check out the Madonna Suite or Pick & Shovel room, for example), making it both a unique and fun place to stay. The cake offered at the restaurant is also some of the best you will ever taste!

11. Santa Fe, New Mexico

If you’re prone to spring fever, Santa Fe, New Mexico – often referred to as “The City Different” might be just the cure. Although you might not escape snow in this high-altitude city – expect springtime temps to range from right around freezing to about 70 degrees depending on when you visit – Santa Fe feels a world apart from the rest of America.

As the United States’ second oldest city, Santa Fe’s colors and striking adobe Pueblo-style architecture will whisk you back to the days of Spanish exploration.

Put the Sante Fe Margarita Trail at the top of your list of things to do in Santa Fe. This pub crawl style challenge takes you to 40+ Santa Fe establishments to sample each restaurant’s signature margarita.

Other Santa Fe highlights include the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the Georgia O’Keefe museum, and Meow Wolf Immersive Art Experience. In this art loving city, be sure to set aside time to browse the art galleries on Canyon Road and after the long winter, take time to recharge at one of Santa Fe’s numerous spas. Don’t forget to sample the excellent New Mexico cuisine!

A great place to stay in Santa Fe is the Inn on the Alameda. This centrally located hotel offers comfortable rooms, amble communal sitting areas, and an on-site restaurant and tequila bar.

The easiest way to get to Santa Fe is to fly into Albuquerque. From there, rent a car and make the easy 65-mile drive north to Santa Fe.

12. Tupelo, Mississippi

While a small, Southern city may not top your list, there are more things to do in Tupelo, Mississippi, than meets the eye. After all, it was the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

Located just under four hours from Nashville and two hours from Graceland and Memphis, the spring weather is relatively moderate, with lows in the upper 40s through the low 60s and highs anywhere from the high 60s to low 80s. 

Tupelo is a quaint town with activities for all types of travelers.

Enjoy nature? Hike and drive the Natchez Trace Parkway, which runs from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee. History and music buffs will enjoy visiting Elvis’s birthplace and other famed sites, such as Tupelo Hardware Co., where Elvis’s mom purchased his first guitar. Art lovers will enjoy the mural tour and also seeing the skillfully painted guitars around downtown. 

If you enjoy shopping, peruse the many shops downtown or stop in one of the many antique stores in the area. Head to Relics Antique Marketplace to shop for unique finds in the former factory where Elvis’s mother worked. A stop at Queen’s Reward Meadery affords the opportunity to sip mead made using honey from Mississippi bees.

Of course, there’s no shortage of amazing places to consume Southern food in Tupelo. Talbot House Bakery is a nonprofit with the best cinnamon buns around, and head to Blue Canoe for genuine Southern cuisine, such as barbecue. Jobos is an upscale surf and turf dining experience inside Hotel Tupelo, where you’ll find cozy, boutique accommodations in the heart of town.

13. Chattanooga, Tennessee

When the weather begins to warm and the trees blossom, a trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee makes the perfect destination for a springtime getaway! Chattanooga is situated between the larger cities of Atlanta, GA to the south and Nashville, TN to the north making it easily accessible by either city’s international airport and a short car ride.

Chattanooga is located at the base of the Appalachian Mountain Ridge and has the most amazing views of the Tennessee Valley. A visit here in the spring will not disappoint! 

The weather is mild with highs ranging in the mid 60’s to upper 70’s for much of March through May. Not only will you experience great weather, but the trees will be in full bloom for most of the spring.

Chattanooga is the perfect destination for a long weekend getaway. Consider booking a hotel in the downtown area, which is quaint and extremely pedestrian-friendly with some fabulous restaurants and attractions. The Hilton Garden Inn Downtown is located close to many of these downtown attractions and restaurants, including the award-winning Creative Discovery Museum which is a favorite for families with kids. You can also walk to the Tennessee Aquarium which is situated right on the riverfront.

Aside from the downtown area, a trip up Lookout Mountain will give you the best views of Tennessee and Georgia in full bloom!  And if you are brave enough, take the Incline Railway for a thrilling way to scale the mountain. You can also make the short walk down to Point Park which is part of the National Park System and gives you a glimpse into the Battle of Lookout Mountain.

Chattanooga is a fantastic destination at any time of year, but there is something about the newness of spring, that makes this quaint southern town come to life!

14. Asheville, North Carolina

The spring is one of the best and most beautiful seasons to visit Asheville, North Carolina with lots of festivals and hiking opportunities! Springtime offers visitors a chance to drive down the famous Blue Ridge Parkway and see it in full bloom with beautiful wildflowers and trees that are starting to turn beautiful shades of green once again.

The weather is also much more comfortable than the summer so outdoor enthusiasts have a more enjoyable experience when hiking the many areas around Asheville or exploring the waterfalls around Pisgah National Forest. The average high temperature is in the 60-70’s℉, with the lows in the 40-50’s℉.

Compared to the busy summer, the spring also brings fewer crowds to the Biltmore Estate, the most popular thing to do in Asheville. You’ll see the beautiful Biltmore Gardens in bloom!

For foodies, the spring brings incredible farmers markets and a chance to eat local produce at farm-to-table restaurants around Asheville, such as Posana.

Asheville is within driving distance of many big cities such as Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta. The nearest airport is the Asheville Regional Airport, however, the closest international airport is in Charlotte, about 2 hours away.

For travelers wanting to make the most of their stay, downtown is the perfect base to explore the city. The Hilton Garden Inn has parking, comfy beds, and the perfect central location!

15. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati is a fabulous city to visit any time of the year, but it’s particularly lovely in the spring. As the snow melts, everything starts to bloom, and the residents begin spending as much time as possible outside! This makes for a fun and energetic atmosphere without the summer crowds. 

As a midsized city in the Midwest, Cincinnati, Ohio has plenty of fun things to do without the overwhelm of a large metropolitan area.

A few highlights for the spring include the Cincinnati Zoo – there is a lot of walking outdoors in this terrific zoo, so it’s nice to enjoy it in the spring when the weather is temperate (40F low to mid-60F high) versus the high humidity of summer. If you encounter a cooler or rainy day on your visit, consider a trip to the Cincinnati Museum Center. With four separate museums located on this beautiful campus, you’ll find something for everyone in your group to enjoy. 

For your spring trip to Cincy, you should check out the Hilton Netherlands downtown. It’s a beautiful older property conveniently located near terrific restaurants, breweries (definitely check out Rhinegeist Brewery if you enjoy visiting breweries), and major tourist attractions such as Findlay Market and the Contemporary Arts Center. 

Arriving in Cincinnati via car is the most convenient option, and it’s within easy driving distance of Indianapolis, IN (two hours), Chicago, IL (five hours), and Louisville, KY (two hours). Alternatively, you could fly into the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and rent a car from there.

16. Newport, Rhode Island

As spring emerges, it’s the perfect time to plan a trip to Newport, Rhode Island. With its picturesque coastline, historic mansions, and charming town allure, Newport is an ideal spring destination.

The best place to experience Newport’s spring blooms is at the Newport Flower Show, which takes place in June. It showcases Newport’s finest garden designs and floral arrangements. Besides, with the mild and comfortable temperatures ranging from 50°F to 60°F, you’ll enjoy the perfect weather. The cherry blossom trees are also worth seeing, particularly at the Japanese Tea Garden.

A must-do for visitors in Newport is to explore the historic mansions that offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Gilded Age. The best place to start is the Breakers Mansion, which was once the summer cottage of Mr. Cornelius Vanderbilt II. It’s a true symbol of the area’s elegance and grandeur and offers a captivating experience of Gatsby-era living. 

Close by the mansions, there is a stunning pedestrian cliff walk that offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Newport’s elaborate mansions.

Newport is famous for its sailing regattas and maritime history. Head downtown to find various shops, restaurants, and galleries. The seafood is to die for!  Newport’s breathtaking views can be enjoyed by taking a scenic drive along Ocean Drive that runs along the shoreline.

17. Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, California, is one of the best spring destinations in the USA because of its mild weather, world-famous landmarks, and stunning outdoor activities. Nicknamed, “The City of Angels,” Los Angeles is a vibrant city offering visitors an opportunity to experience long days filled with sunshine and clear skies.

Getting to Los Angeles is easy with so many direct flights to Los Angeles International Airport and the Hollywood Burbank Airport.  Because Los Angeles is a sprawling city, the easiest way to get around is by car. 

There is no shortage of hotels in Los Angeles. Deciding where to stay should be based on where you plan to do most of your activities. For a luxurious experience in Los Angeles, consider Hotel Bel-Air.  If you are a beach person, Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica might be right for you.

While much of the country is still thawing from the winter chill, the temperatures in Los Angeles in the spring are mild. Average highs in Los Angeles hover in the 70s, while the lows are in the 50s.

Los Angeles is home to iconic beaches that can be ideal in the spring. Even though the Pacific Ocean remains chilly, you can often catch a picture-perfect day at the beach. Popular beaches include Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica Beach, and Malibu’s Zuma Beach. 

If you are an active traveler, you might enjoy a hike to see the Hollywood sign, a bike ride along the beach, or a surf session.

Also consider one of the many stunning gardens in Los Angeles that become colorful in the spring with fresh blooms including the Huntington, Descanso Gardens, or the Exposition Park Rose Garden.

18. Las Vegas, Nevada

If you’re looking for a warm destination to visit in the spring that also has plenty to do, look no further than Las Vegas.

During the spring months, the weather in Las Vegas is comfortable, without being too hot or too cool. The average high temperatures range from 70-80 degrees, with lows around 50 – you’ll need a jacket for the chillier evenings, but the daytime is perfect for walking around the strip or participating in an outdoor activity.

No Las Vegas itinerary is complete without spending time exploring the famous Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is around 4 miles long, and it’s lined with casino hotels, shops, restaurants, and plenty of things to do. Spend a day wandering down the Strip, starting with a photo stop at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. Then, you can casino-hop down the strip, stopping at iconic hotels like Paris Las Vegas, Caesar’s Palace, and the Bellagio.

Las Vegas is also known for its shows, ranging from cirque du soleil acrobatic productions to residency concerts by artists like U2 and Adele. Attending a show is a perfect way to spend an evening. After the show, make sure to stop at the Bellagio to see the fountain show, which is best after dark.

For a change of pace, take a day trip to the stunning Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just a short drive from the city. The weather makes springtime one of the best times to visit.

Horseshoe Las Vegas is an affordable and convenient place to stay. It’s located right in the middle of the Strip, and there’s a monorail station that makes it very easy to travel around.

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is located very close to the Strip, making it very easy to get to your hotel from the airport.

19. Dallas, Texas

Dallas-Fort Worth not only boasts exceptional weather in spring with high temperatures in the mid-70s and lows in the mid-50s, which is ideal for outdoor activities, but the region also transforms into a vivid canvas adorned with wildflowers.

When searching for the best spring destinations in the US, look no further than Nashville, Tennessee. Music City is the perfect destination for spring getaways thanks to the gorgeous weather, ample activities and places to eat, and the start of concert season.

The city is perfect for any type of traveler. Nashville is known for its music, so it is a music lover’s paradise. It’s also known for bachelorette parties and girls getaways. But you may not have known how kid-friendly it is too. Most of the music venues and bars downtown are open to all ages throughout the day and there’s tons of family-friendly activities to enjoy.

21. Chicago, Illinois

If you’re looking for one of the best spring destinations to visit in the US then consider a trip to Chicago. The windy city comes alive with activity after the long winter and is home to a variety of unique events since daily highs are now between 45 F and 66 F and daily lows are between 34 F and 54 F. 

So, after you fly into O’Hare International Airport, check out seasonal events like the Cubs home opener at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Latin Film Festival, Uncorked: Chicago Wine Festival, and Chicago Mayfest.

You’ll also have no trouble visiting some of the best museums in the country since Chicago museums are less crowded in the spring. Highlights include The Art Institute of Chicago with its gorgeous lakeside location, as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. 

Additionally, spring means that the waters around Chicago open back up to boat traffic. So, enjoy a fun, architecture tour on the river that takes you past some of the most iconic buildings in the city as you learn about the people who designed this incredible city. 

Next, head to summit the Willis Tower. The skydeck sits on the 103rd floor and allows you to see for 40/50 miles in every direction. You can also step out onto The Ledge, a glass area that extends from the building and that allows you to look 1,353 feet down at the ground below. 

Finally, if you’re wondering where to stay in Chicago then spend the night at the Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile. It’s a lovely, 5-star hotel with contemporary rooms that are outfitted with Keurig Coffee makers. You can also visit a cocktail bar with views of Lake Michigan through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

22. New York City, New York

New York is great whatever time of year you visit, but it is wonderful in the spring.

Firstly, the spring temperatures make for the best weather to walk around Manhattan in. The temperatures usually range from 50°F to 68°F. There will also be fewer crowds at this time of the year than if you were to visit in the summer. 

Secondly, you can really see the season come to life. Enjoy seeing the cherry blossoms and tulips bloom in all of the popular parks. Central Park, of course, has some of the best natural scenery and one of the best free things to do in NYC. Bryant Park is also a great urban park to stop by. 

When it comes to activities, you can head to the top of the Empire State Building for incredible skyline views of New York. Or, take the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Other attractions to check out include Times Square and Grand Central Terminal. 

A great place to stay in Manhattan is the Hyatt Grand Central. It is centrally located to top attractions and welcomes everybody, including families!

The closest airport to the hotel is LaGuardia (LGA) or John F Kennedy (JFK), and you’ll be able to easily access public transport from there, too.

23. Orlando, Florida

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping foot in Diagon Alley or seeing Cinderella’s Castle, Orlando is the place to do it and spring is one of the best times of year to visit.

Not only has the intense summer heat and humidity not quite crept up yet, but rainy season hasn’t quite hit yet either (not to say you won’t get rain because you certainly can and likely will).

To visit Orlando, you’ll fly into MCO or SFB, where MCO is the large, more popular airport, but SFB frequently has inexpensive flight deals from smaller domestic destinations. If you plan to visit a number of Orlando attractions, renting a car is best. Alternatively, if you are visiting the theme parks, you can get by on ride shares.

Some of the most popular theme parks are Universal Orlando with their Mardi Gras celebration in early spring (with so much themed food) and Walt Disney World where EPCOT hosts the annual Flower and Garden Festival in the springtime. When planning your trip to the parks, be sure to check crowd calendars as spring break is always a crowded time to visit. Mid-April and beyond are usually best to steer clear of those crowds.

Aside from the theme parks, don’t miss the Kennedy Space Center, one of the many beaches that you can drive to from Orlando, and the amazing food scene in the city.

Expect temperatures in the mid-80s during the day and mid-60s at night.

24. Miami, Florida

If you’re looking for one of the best springtime destinations in the US, then Miami should be high on your list! Between its beautiful beaches, artistic culture, world-famous nightlife, and sunny weather, there’s something for anyone to enjoy. Even if you only have a few days to spend in Miami, this city is 100% worth it!

One of the best parts about visiting Miami during spring is the weather. Since this period is before the hurricane season, you’ll benefit from less humidity and rain and more sunny skies. For springtime, the average temperatures run at a high of 86°F and a low of 70°F, with May being the hottest.

The weather conditions provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy one of Miami’s most popular activities, the beach! There are three main beaches that visitors go to in the city.

South Beach is the most popular beach and will be the best if you want a lively, party-filled atmosphere. Meanwhile, North Beach is optimal for those who want a quieter, residential beach for their vacation. Lastly, Mid Beach is perfect if you want a mix of both atmospheres.

Aside from the beaches, Miami attracts many tourists during this time due to the entertainment options. Many of the top venues in the city will have nonstop world-famous DJs, artists, and other shows. The best areas to be for entertainment will be Wynwood, Downtown, and South Beach.

Be sure also to check out the artistic offerings the city has. There are so many museum choices to choose from, including Superblue and the Pérez Art Museum.

Regarding reaching Miami, the most popular way is by flying into Miami International Airport (MIA). Alternatively, you might see a less expensive flight from Fort Lauderdale International Airport. With good traffic, FLL is around a 35-minute drive from Miami.

National Parks Perfect for a Spring Vacation

25. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Known for its desert landscapes dotted with colossal rocks and its iconic namesake trees, Joshua Tree is a must-visit national park, with spring being one of the best times of the year to do so.

One of the biggest draws to visiting Joshua Tree in the spring is the weather. March to May bring comfortable temperatures with average highs of around 85°F and lows that hover around a cool 50°F. It’s the perfect weather to catch the Joshua Tree Music Festival held in May.

Spring also brings the wildflower blooms, adding pops of color to the otherwise neutral-colored horizon. Although it doesn’t happen every year, you may be lucky and witness the Joshua Tree blooms in late spring. The ends of their twisted, bristled branches will start to produce a giant white bulb that opens up into clusters of flowers. 

Many people on a day trip itinerary to Joshua Tree drive along the scenic route through the park. They stop at Keys View for a great vantage point of the whole Coachella Valley and at Cholla Cactus Garden to admire the fuzzy cacti. However, the real excitement in Joshua Tree lies in its massive boulders, for which the park has over 8,000 climbing routes. Even if you’re not a rock climber, you can still hike around popular attractions like Skull Rock and Arch Rock. 

If you’re staying overnight in the area, try securing a campsite inside the park, like at Jumbo Rocks Campground. Seeing the boulders and Joshua Tree silhouette against the starry night is worth it. 

Located within a three-hour drive from Los Angeles and San Diego, Joshua Tree is a tourist hub and a local getaway. For those flying in, the nearest airport is Palm Springs International Airport, approximately 45 minutes away.

26. Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Spring is the perfect time to visit Petrified Forest National Park. Temperatures are already warm, but not as hot as they can get in the summer. The crowds are fewer as they’re in the high season, which is summer time. In summer there are violent thunderstorms, which haven’t arrived yet in the spring. The wildflower season starts in spring giving the park beautiful colors.

Petrified Forest National Park is located in Northeast Arizona. The park offers Painted Desert vistas and petrified logs of 211 to 218 million years old. On the 28 mile road through the park you can see all the highlights. On the numerous viewpoints you have a good view on petrified logs, rock art and the Painted Desert.

Next to the main road the 6 walking trails are also a must-do. You get to see even more of the park, such as a hundred room pueblo or Old Faithful, a 10 feet wide petrified log.

A great place to stay is the Historic WigWam Motel in Holbrook. It has wigwams as rooms, which is cool.

Flagstaff is 116 miles away from Petrified Forest National Park. You can follow Interstate 40 from Flagstaff to the park’s entrance. The closest international airport is the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which is 207 miles away.

March has an average high temperature of 59°F and a low of 31°F. April has a bit higher temperatures with a high of 66°F and a low of 36°F. May has a high of 74°F and a low of 43°F.

27. Arches National Park, Utah

One of the best spring destinations in the US is Arches National Park. This park near Moab is filled with upwards of 2,000 gorgeous sandstone arches. 

These natural rock formations are best viewed in the spring when crowds are minimal and when temperatures are cooler. Generally, daily highs range from 60º to 80º F during the day and from 30º to 50º F at night.

However, you will need an Arches Timed Entry Ticket when visiting from April 1 through October 31, between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. However, if you are unable to obtain a permit you can visit the park either before 6:00 am or after 5:00 pm, when there are even fewer people in the area.

To visit, fly into Salt Lake City International Airport and rent a car to make the 3.5-hour drive to the park. Just be sure to stay at Moab Springs Ranch since the staff are helpful and the property has cute little bungalows that come equipped with kitchens. There’s also a communal pool that guests will love after a long day spent hiking. 

Once in the park, be sure to visit Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch in Devils Garden, and Balanced Rock. All are iconic local landmarks that are not to be missed during your visit to Arches in the spring. 

Other fun things to do include the Arches National Park scenic drive. It’s a stunning, 43-mile road that takes between  2 and 3 hours to complete. You can also go stargazing at spots like Balanced Rock, The Windows, the Garden of Eden Viewpoint, and Panorama Point. If you time it right, you can even enjoy stunning photos of the Milky Way at this time of year.

28. Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Canyonlands National Park in Utah is the least visited of the Big 5 Utah National Parks. This underrated destination is the perfect spring destination for those that love nature with less crowds. You can enjoy incredible canyon views at drive up viewpoints or by hiking, all while being close to the charming city of Moab.

Canyonlands offers panoramic views from over one thousand feet above the surrounding landscape and includes rock arches, spires, and winding mining roads. Check out Mesa Arch at sunrise for a picturesque view of the canyonlands through an arch rock. If you’re looking for a day time hike, Murphy Point is known for some of the best views in the park. And you cannot go to Canyonlands without driving Grand View Point Drive and hiking the short and easy hike to Grand View Point Overlook.

If you’re planning to spend multiple days in the area, head to the Island in the Sky Visitor Center for information on other hiking and viewpoints that the rangers recommend. Back in Moab get lunch or dinner at the Moab Food Truck Park that offers 14 different food trucks! And while you’re on Main Street, check out some of the boutique shops.

If you are not booking camping at Island in the Sky Campground within Canyonlands National Park, Hideout at the Rim is a bed and breakfast with incredible views and rustic charm in Moab. With trailheads out the backyard, it is in the quieter parts of Moab, but still just a short drive to all the happenings of downtown.

Get here by renting a car from Salt Lake City airport and making the 4 hour drive or by flying into the Canyonlands Regional Airport just outside of Moab. Come prepared for desert spring weather of highs up to mid 70’s F and lows into the 30’s F at night.

29. Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Many people are not even aware that there are two national parks in Texas, and spring just happens to be the best time to visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park, home of the tallest mountains in the entire state, and some of the best recreational opportunities!

Spring is the ideal time to visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park for several reasons. 

First, there are fewer crowds, which means you get more camping and hiking to yourself. 

Second, it’s the perfect weather window, right between the harsh, cold, windy winters, and the unbearably hot summers. Daytime highs average between 53 – 67 degrees Fahrenheit, and lows average between 35 – 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Third, it’s the perfect time to hike some of the high elevation trails that this park is known for, like the highest point in Texas at Guadalupe Peak, when weather conditions are more moderate at higher altitude. 

Finally, you can catch a few spring bonuses going on, like wildflower blooms in the desert, and newborn wildlife like resident deer, elk, foxes, black bears, and jackrabbits.  

Spring is the best time to enjoy the wealth of hikes in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, including a few favorites like the Guadalupe Peak Trail, the McKittrick Canyon Trail, the Pinery Nature Trail, and the Devils Hall Trail. You can visit several remaining historical cabins on the McKittrick Canyon Trail, as well as the remains of the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach station on the Pinery Nature Trail. Spring is also a great time to camp in the Guadalupe Mountains, as evenings are mild.

There are plenty of accommodations nearby, including two campgrounds in the park, as well as hotels nearby in Carlsbad, such as the Home2Suites by Hilton.  Guadalupe Mountains National Park is about a 1 hour drive from Carlsbad, New Mexico, the closest large town, and about 2 hours from El Paso, the closest international airport.

30. Acadia National Park, Maine

If you’re looking for a spring outdoor adventure with fewer crowds, fantastic hiking, and great seafood, look no further than Acadia National Park!

Acadia is a stunning national park situated along the coast of Maine. This national park is one of the top 10 most visited in the US, so if you’re looking to visit but don’t want to deal with the crowds, springtime is a great option.

The weather in Acadia in springtime can be a little fickle, but if you don’t mind the cooler temperatures and the chance of a little rain, you’ll have a great time. Average temperatures in April and May can range from high 30s to low 60s during the day and 30s and 40s at nighttime.

Hiking is one of the best things to do in Acadia this time of year. The cooler temperatures make it ideal weather for outdoor exploring. Some of the most popular trails include the Beehive Trail, Ocean Path, and South Bubble Trail. Even in the early spring, when the leaves haven’t quite made their appearance yet, the views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes are stunning.

If you’re a morning person (and even if you’re not), the view of the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain can’t be missed. The benefit of visiting in the springtime is that you won’t need a reservation, which makes it better for choosing the day with the best weather.

When you need a break, head into Bar Harbor for some shopping, relaxing, and dining. If you love seafood, this quaint town has some of the best. When visiting in the spring, you won’t have to fight the crowds of tourists to find somewhere to eat.

At the end of the day, head back to your hotel for a good night’s sleep. One of the highest rated Acadia National Park accommodations in the area is the Bar Harbor Inn. It has a spa, restaurant, pools, fitness center, and gorgeous waterfront views.

The best way to get to Acadia National Park is to fly into Bangor International Airport and rent a car to drive the rest of the way (about one hour), or to fly into the small, local airport (Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport) and either take the shuttle or rent a car.

Places to Visit in Spring in the US with Special Events, Blooms or Phenomena

31. Maui, Hawai’i

The swaying palms and sunny beaches of Maui are a treat at any time of year. Spring break is still considered high season on the island, but mid-April is the start of the low season. That means lower prices, fewer crowds, and less traffic.

The verdant heart of Maui is in full bloom and you can admire the wildflowers, pick your own strawberries at the Kula Country Farms, or explore the waterfalls at their best. The coastal conditions tend to be calmer than during winter and the mornings are perfect for snorkeling.

Visiting in early spring will allow you to catch the tail end of the island’s whale-watching season. It’s an excellent time to watch the calves frolicking in the warm ocean waters.

At the end of March, you can join the celebrations of the Prince Kuhio Festival, a state holiday in honor of the like-named Hawaiian royal. In April, sports enthusiasts can participate in the scenic Maui Marathon. Another celebration that takes place in spring is the Lei Day Heritage Festival on May Day.

Combine these seasonal events with some classic attractions such as the Road to Hana drive and the Haleakala sunrise experience.

A rental car is recommended to make the most of your Maui trip. You can pick it up at Kahului Airport right after you land. Daily high temperatures average 81°F to 85°F while the daily lows average 65°F to 70°F. The sunniest resort areas during spring are Kihei and Wailea in South Maui and Kaanapali in West Maui. It’s also where you’ll find the majority of Maui accommodations. These come in all shapes and sizes, from cozy condos to amazing Maui hotels with water slides and lazy rivers such as the Grand Wailea and The Westin Maui Resort & Spa.

32. Anchorage, Alaska

Spring means aurora borealis season in Anchorage, Alaska!  A spring night for aurora hunting is much warmer than in the arctic winter. Snow lingers through spring creating winter landscapes for you to explore by day. 

You might still glimpse a frozen waterfall along the Seward Highway and a melting snowpack could refreeze at night creating the perfect morning crust for a bike or ski. Spring is the best time of year for incredible destinations in Chugach National Forest like Skookum Glacier or the Arctic to Indian Trail in Chugach State Park. 

Enjoy all of Alaska’s natural charm during the day and hopefully you’ll see some dancing northern lights at night, too!

Spring is shoulder season meaning its easier to catch a last minute flight to Anchorage when the NOAA 72 hour aurora forecast goes off. 

Most visitors ask can you see the northern lights from Anchorage? And the answer is absolutely during a strong storm, but the best sightings will always be away from city lights and anyone who’s coming to Anchorage with aurora chasing as their main goal should be ready to drive north of the city lights. Trailheads fill with aurora chasers on a big night and a few brave souls hike or camp out for a truly remote aurora experience.  

Girdwood is a wonderful resort town within the municipality of Anchorage and my favorite place to stay is the Alyeska Hotel.  It’s about an hour drive from the airport as are some of the best aurora borealis viewing locations. Temperatures range might go below freezing at night with highs reaching the 50s and 60s during the day. 

Whether you’re up for daytime Alaskan adventures or aurora borealis chasing, spring is an excellent time for your Alaskan adventure!

Seattle is a perfect springtime destination in the US. Spring in Seattle offers a perfect blend of outdoor beauty and urban charm, with fewer crowds to navigate. 34. Skagit Valley, Washington

Located just an hour north of Seattle is Mount Vernon, which at first glance might seem more like a place you drive through on a Pacific Northwest road trip. However, in spring, there is one incredible reason to stop and honestly make a whole trip out of visiting and that’s the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

Every April, tulip farms in and around Mount Vernon come alive with these colorful flowers. Travelers come from all over the world to see them!

The main farms to visit are Roozengaarde, Tulip Valley Farms, Tulip Town, and Garden Rosalyn. Each has their own display of tulips as well as festivities to partake in…and their own admissions. It’s best to purchase tickets online ahead of time as they can sell out of tickets for the day.

The best way to experience the tulip festival is to fly into Seattle, rent a car, drive up north, and spend a few days in the area. Alternatively, take a day trip tour from Seattle.

La Conner is an adorable riverside-marina town to base yourself in and that has its own tulip festivities. The La Conner Channel Lodge is a great place to stay with cozy rooms, views of the water, and parking on site.

Washington weather is known for being rainy, so despite highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s, come prepared for rain, especially since the tulip farms get muddy!

35. San Diego, California

San Diego, California is particularly lovely to visit in the spring, with April and May being an ideal time to explore this coastal city.

One of the main reasons to visit San Diego in the spring is the weather. With mild temperatures averaging around 70-75°F (21-24°C), visitors can enjoy the city’s outdoor offerings without the harsh heat of summer. The blooming season adds to the city’s beauty, with flowers adding color to parks, gardens, and streets.

Spring in San Diego also coincides with numerous events and festivals. The San Diego Zoo, one of the world’s most famous zoos, is a must-visit during this time! Spring sees the birth of baby animals! Additionally, Balboa Park, right outside the zoo, hosts various spring events, like garden tours and art exhibitions.

Spring offers perfect conditions for relaxing on the beach, sunbathing, and water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding along the coastline. It’s a great time to see the sea lions, kayak, and walk the coastline in La Jolla.

Also in the spring, many visitors enjoy Coronado for the beach, watersports, shopping, and dining. The famous Hotel del Coronado is right on the beach and offers many activities for guests.

April to May is also an excellent time for whale watching off the coast of San Diego. Gray whales migrate from the Bering Sea to Baja California during this period. Visitors can often see the whales up close.

San Diego International Airport has many air connection points throughout the US and the world. The airport is right in the center of the city, and almost all popular attractions are about 15 minutes or less from the city center. San Diego is about two hours south of Los Angeles.

36. Scottsdale, Arizona

Scottsdale, Arizona is one of the best places in the U.S. to visit during the spring! This sunny destination is the perfect spot for a spring break trip with the family, bachelorette parties, baseball enthusiasts, golf lovers, and those who want a break from the snow.

The spring season in Scottsdale is the ideal time of year to enjoy outdoor activities. Soak up the warm desert sun and catch an Major League Baseball spring training baseball game, which happens each March only in Arizona and Florida. Visit the Desert Botanical Garden to see cacti in full bloom and wildflowers galore. Or, hike one of the many scenic trails in the Sonoran Desert, such as Camelback Mountain, Pinnacle Peak, and Gateway Loop Trail.

Scottsdale is located less than 10 miles, or a quick 15-minute drive, from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Tip: If you plan to stay in Old Town and do not plan to venture far from this area, you could technically get away without renting a car.

For first-time visitors to Scottsdale and those who like to be near the action, Old Town serves as the perfect central location. Old Town offers convenient access to popular restaurants, shopping, and vibrant nightlife.

37. Texas Hill Country, Texas

For one of the best spring destinations in the US, head to the beautiful Texas Hill Country where the air is filled with mild temperatures and the hills are covered in wildflowers. Spring is the perfect time of year for great weather with average highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. The area is easily reached by flying to either Austin or San Antonio and then renting a car to explore the adorable Hill Country small towns just a short drive away.

It is recommended that travelers base themselves in Fredericksburg. There’s plenty of amazing things to do in Fredericksburg. For example, Main Street is lined with great boutiques and tasty restaurants. Dozens of wineries fill the area as well as a rich German history with plenty of museums and historic buildings to explore. Hoffman Haus would be a great place to stay in Fredericksburg. It has beautiful rooms and a central location, so the breakfast basket delivered each morning is just icing on the cake!

Drive nearby to Johnson City for a history lesson and nature and Lyndon B. Johnson State Park. Pedernales Falls is a beautiful spot for a hike or even a short dip in the swimming hole on a warm day. Families with children will love the Science Mill interactive museum. While it will be a bit too early for peach season, strawberry picking may be available at Jenschke Farms.

Wimberley is a hidden gem when it comes to Hill Country, but the adorable town is worth a visit too. Arty boutiques, painted street art cowboy boots, a natural preserve, outdoor patio restaurants, and the iconic Jacob’s Well natural spring are highlights.

Of all the wonderful reasons that travelers will love Texas Hill Country in the spring, one reason always rises to the top – seeing the Texas bluebonnet fields! They can be spotted along all the roads, but some especially popular spots are Willow City Loop and Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area. These gorgeous blue blooms are the Texas state flower, and they blanket the hills in late March and April. Locals adore them and visitors to Texas Hill Country can easily see why the bluebonnets make the Hill Country such an amazing spring vacation destination!

38. New Orleans, Louisiana

Spring is the absolute best time to visit New Orleans. The weather is perfect, there are festivals happening nearly every weekend, and it’s crawfish season. Also, if you are visiting in early spring, right after the Mardi Gras festivities have ended, you will also see lower prices for hotels.

Weather in spring varies. In early spring from March to the beginning of April, you can expect temperatures to vary between lows in the high 50s Fahrenheit to highs in the mid 70s Fahrenheit. Though it’s not uncommon to see a cold front or a warmer day pop up. Later on from the end of April into May, temperatures really start to rise and you can expect lows in the low 70s and highs into the high 80s. 

Spring is a great time to experience the culture of New Orleans through the many festivals happening! 

French Quarter Festival occurs in mid-April and is a free event. Different stages are set up throughout the French Quarter with live music and local restaurants set up food stands. It’s a great time to experience the culture and food of New Orleans! 

Jazz Fest happens the last weekend of April and first weekend of May. This is a great event for music lovers with performances from a wide variety of different artists. Hotels tend to book up quickly during these weekends as well, so be sure to book your stay (even a haunted stay) well in advance if visiting during this time. 

The Frenchman Hotel in New Orleans is a beautiful boutique hotel located on Frenchman Street, the perfect location for walking to many local music venues. While Bourbon Street is a famous nightlife spot, if you are looking for local live music, Frenchman St is the place to be. The hotel embodies the New Orleans culture and aesthetic with its historic charm. There is also a courtyard pool perfect for a cool plunge on warm spring afternoons.

If you’re looking to extend your trip, or take a day trip to see more of the Gulf coast region, Ocean Springs, Mississippi is a great extension to your New Orleans trip.

39. Savannah, Georgia

If you’re looking for the best time to visit Savannah, GA, you can’t go wrong with a spring getaway!

The weather is considered “Chamber of Commerce weather,” with average daytime highs in the mid-70s during March and low to mid-80s during April and May.  

Aside from the incredible weather, springtime is popular because it’s azalea season in Savannah! For a few weeks out of the year, the city is awash in pink and white blooms. You’ll find the highest concentration of azaleas throughout the Historic District, in Forsyth Park, and in beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery.

In fact, one of the best things to do during a spring visit is to simply stroll around and admire the squares and all the unique architectural styles in the Historic District. There are plenty of guided walking tours available, from Black history tours to food tours to cemetery tours.

During the week of St. Patrick’s Day, Savannah is known for hosting one of the biggest parades on the entire East Coast! The vibe changes that week from genteel Southern city to something more akin to a giant frat party, so keep that in mind if you’re planning a trip during the third week of March. It’s great fun, but it does get a little rowdy – especially along River Street and in the entertainment zones. Make note that accommodations for that week typically sell out at least 3 months in advance.

The SAV/HHI International Airport has won best airport in the country for 4 years in a row, and it welcomes guests from throughout the US and overseas. From there, you can reach the Historic District in less than 30 minutes by rental car, Uber, Lyft, or taxi.

40. Washington DC

A great destination to visit in the US in spring is Washington DC because it’s when the cherry blossoms are in bloom!

Cherry blossom season in DC is an experience most anyone could appreciate.  The blooms all over the city are incredible, the temperatures are warming up, and the Cherry Blossom Festival is in full swing. Between that and the usual sites and activities the city has to offer, there’s no shortage of things to see and do while you’re there.  

Make sure to check the official National Cherry Blossom website for a schedule of events. This includes Japanese, kite, and art festivals, parades, food trucks and more. You’ll find cherry blossom trees throughout the city, but take a walk around the Tidal Basin for the most stunning display and views of the blooms.

In addition to the cherry blossoms and festivities, make sure to also check out the many sites DC offers year round. This includes Arlington National Cemetery, the Capitol building, Washington Monument, White House, the numerous Smithsonian museums, and more. (As for the Smithsonians, note that the National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of American History, National Air and Space Museum, and National Museum of African American History and Culture are among the most popular).

41. Crystal River, Florida

Have you ever wanted to swim with the manatees? These gentle giants take refuge in the natural spring waters of Crystal River, Florida, making it a great place to visit in the springtime. Crystal River is the only place where you can, legally, swim with the manatees. 

Manatee season runs from October through March, with some manatees lingering in the area throughout the year. 

Several outfitters in the area offer eco-tours, kayak tours, self-guided tours, and rental gear so you get the best experience possible. After watching a brief video on how to interact with these threatened animals, your tour operator will guide you to the manatees around the bay and river. 

Along with the most amazing wildlife encounters imaginable, Crystal River also offers opportunities for bird watching, hiking, kayaking, and fishing. 

Crystal River is located 75 miles north of Tampa International Airport and 70 miles from Gainesville Regional Airport. 

There are many accommodations in and around Crystal River, however, if you’re looking for the ultimate getaway, The Plantation Resort on Crystal River is your place. Amenities include an onsite tiki bar, full-service spa, boat docks, and an adventure outfitter on the property. 

Crystal River’s average temperature in March and April is 80 degrees during the day and 53 degrees at night. Springtime is not typically rainy, although it is possible.
