Map of the Best Fall Destinations in USA

Top National Parks to Visit in Fall

1. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Ohioโ€™s Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of the best places to visit in the fall in the US.

After all, this gorgeous 33,000-acre park is nestled along the Cuyahoga River and is filled with vast forests that come alive with vibrant fall colors. In fact, these hues typically peak around the third week of October

So, if you want to avoid the crowds of the summer, love fun fall colors, and enjoy mild temperatures then this is the place for you.

Just fly into Akron Fulton International Airport and make the 24-minute drive to the park. Once there, visit Brandywine Falls, admire the sweeping views from Ledges Overlook, and visit the Canal Exploration Center

Itโ€™s a cute little museum that explores the building of the canal throughout the early 19th century. Afterward, appreciate the beauty of the canal by taking a stroll along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail

However, one of the all-time best things to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the fall is to hop aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad! It cruises right through the park and offers epic views of the areaโ€™s amazing fall foliage.

Finally, unwind and relax for the evening inside a room at the Stanford House. Itโ€™s a historic farmhouse in Cuyahoga Valley National Park that has 9 uniquely decorated rooms that can accommodate up to 30 people.

2. Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway is hands down one of the best places to visit in the fall in the USA.

See, this incredible, 469-mile route will take you all the way from Charlottesville, Virginia to Asheville, North Carolina.

And if you time you visit for mid-October, the Blue Ridge Mountains will feature vibrant fall foliage that is unlike anything youโ€™ve ever seen.

However, youโ€™ll want to spend at least four days doing this trip since there are a ton of stops along the way. Youโ€™ll also want to fly into Dulles International Airport since you can grab a rental car upon arrival and make the hourโ€™s drive to the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Once on the highway, be prepared to take it slow since this is a small, two-lane highway with a 45 mph speed limit. But, itโ€™s worth it to make epic stops at Humpback Gap, Mabry Mill, and the Blueridge Music Center.

Now, if youโ€™re visiting in the fall then some of the areaโ€™s best foliage can be seen from Rough Ridge Overlook. You can also enjoy one of the best Blue Ridge Parkway hikes at milepost 316.4 since this gorgeous trail takes you to Linville Falls

Finally, when you arrive in Asheville, be sure to take the family to the Eliada Fall Festival and Corn Maze, which is held every weekend up until Halloween.

You can also book a room at The Restoration Asheville since itโ€™s an incredible hotel that is well-located near the Biltmore Estate and that features a lovely rooftop terrace.

3. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is a fantastic destination to visit in the fall. The parkโ€™s Skyline Drive is a perfect place to see fall foliage.

Shenandoah is about 70 miles west of Washington, D.C. You would need a car to have the most enjoyable experience in the park. The countryโ€™s capital (IAD or DCA airports) is the cheapest place to fly into when visiting Shenandoah.

Fall is a beautiful but busy time in the park. The fall foliage season in Shenandoah usually peaks around the third week of October. Many Washingtonians drive down to the park on the weekends to get away from the city.

Luckily, the park is so big that you do not have to worry about crowds most of the time. You can choose between three park districts, over 70 scenic overlooks, and over 500 miles of trails. You will need a couple days in the park if you decide to do both the scenic drive and the hiking trails.

You can see fall foliage at the Blue Ridge Mountains just by taking the Skyline Drive. Embark on the Appalachian Trail or any of the shorter hikes in the park to see waterfalls and wildlife. Black bears, deer, foxes, beavers, and countless other species call Shenandoah home.

You should look into Skyland Resort for lodging. Skyland is located right in the park, about halfway into the Skyline Drive. The resortโ€™s location enables you to space your visit between two days. You can see more overlooks and take longer hikes in the park by staying in Skyland Resort.

Since Skyline Drive is an extension of Blue Ridge Pkwy, itโ€™s no wonder the fall colors are just as magnificent.

4. New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia

The New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia is one of the best places to visit in fall in the US. The park is full of beautiful views, fun hikes, wildlife, and during the fall you will also get the opportunity to view the epic colors as the trees start to change. Fall also brings the best time to go white water rafting through the gorge! New River Gorge can be a fun weekend trip but makes for an especially epic West Virginia road trip instead!

Getting here is fairly easy for a national park. Fly into West Virginia International Yeager Airport, in Charleston, WV. From there you will want to rent a car and drive about one hour to the park. Adventures on the Gorge has cabins to rent, or stay in the adorable Historic Morris Harvey House Bed & Breakfast in Fayetteville instead.

Visiting the park in the fall means perfect weather. The highs will start out in the mid 70s and drop to the mid 50s by the end of the season. You can hike and explore the wilderness with super comfortable temperatures!

Since the fall foliage here is gorgeous, you might catch some crowds at the popular overlooks, so try out some of the hikes instead to get away from the other visitors. Hike to Long Point, a 2.9 mile trail with some stunning viewpoints of the colorful trees!

If youโ€™re here on the third Saturday in October, be sure to attend the annual event at the bridge called Bridge Day. The bridge closes down to cars and over 400 people base jump off the bridge.

While youโ€™re here, you must go white water rafting, of course! You can choose from half-day, full-day or multi-day experiences and they have options for kids and adults.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee and North Carolina

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most popular US national park and its peak time is fall. Thatโ€™s because the fall foliage is unreal during September and October AND this national park has free admission. However, starting in 2023, you do need a parking pass, which is $5 daily or $15 weekly where you can pay in person at the entrances or at the automated machines found throughout the park.

To get to the Smokies, the closest airport is Tyson McGee Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee, located just an hour and a half tops from the park. From there, you can rent a car and make your way to the north entrance by Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Once in the park, be sure to visit Clingmans Dome for 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, hike to Laurel Falls, a completely accessible paved trail to a gorgeous multi-tiered waterfall, and drive the scenic Cades Cove for beautiful views of the valley.

For an offbeat spooky pick for autumn, stop by Elkmont Ghost Town, an abandoned Appalachian settlement located right in the park.

It takes 3 days to see the Great Smoky Mountains, so the best places to stay while you explore are in Gatlinburg where Sidney James Mountain Lodge is a great mid-range option with both rooms and cabins and a pool!

6. Acadia National Park, Maine

Add Acadia National Park in Maine to your fall bucket list this year. In Acadia youโ€™ll get dramatic coastal scenery, rugged mountains, and vibrant fall foliage. Catch peak foliage in late September โ€“ mid October and see the trees come alive with red, orange, gold, and yellow hues. Going to Acadia during the fall isnโ€™t exactly a secret in the Northeast, so go during the week and start your hikes early to avoid crowds.

Acadia and the surrounding Bar Harbor, ME area has plenty of fall festivals to partake in. Some of the best festivals are the annual Acadia Night Sky Festival, Maine Harvest Festival, or Acadiaโ€™s Oktoberfest with beer, food, crafts, and music.

One to two days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Acadia National Park. Head to Cadillac Mountain for sunrise one morning to be among the first in the US to see the sunrise. You must make a vehicle reservation to drive the road in advance or do the hike to the viewpoint.  Afterward, drive the Park Loop Road scenic drive that winds along the coast and offers vistas of rocky shores and lighthouses.

Some of the best hikes in the park are the Beehive Trail, the Bubbles Trail, the Precipice Loop, Gorham Mountain, and the path around Jordan Pond. There are trails here for every level and skill. Since there are plentiful lakes in the area, kayaking is also a great fall activity. Kayaking out on the water lets you see the fall foliage from a unique perspective!

The Atlantic Eyrie Lodge in Bar Harbor is one of the best places to stay while visiting. It is a stoneโ€™s throw from the National Park entrance, offers breakfast, the rooms have amazing views, and is highly rated by guests.

Bangor National Airport is the closest International Airport to Acadia and is about 1 hour away by car.

7. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Mount Rainier National Park, home to the tallest mountain in Washington state, is an incredible place to visit in the fall.

Thereโ€™s plenty of benefits of visiting in the fallโ€”for example, youโ€™ll have fewer crowds and bugs to deal with and a much better chance of seeing wildlife. But best of all, the fall colors in Mount Rainier are nothing short of dazzling!

While the park does have a few deciduous trees, like big maple leafs, sprinkled throughout its pine tree forests that turn spectacular colors, the real showstopper is the wildflowers and shrubs that carpet the mountain slopes. Come fall, this greenery bursts into dazzling shades of burnt orange, scarlet, and gold, as far as the eye can see.

Thereโ€™s a number of hikes in the park that are renowned for the fall foliage. For example, the Skyline Loop will take you through fields of autumnal wildflowers and berries all the way to the ancient Nisqually Glacier, up close and personal.

If you want to go on a hike thatโ€™s a bit more off-the-beaten path, the Summerland Trail offers a little bit of everythingโ€”a rushing river, jaw-dropping fall foliage, and incredible views of Rainier. For a real adventure, try snagging a permit to backcountry camp along the trailโ€”itโ€™s a great spot to see black bears as they get ready for the long, snowy winter ahead.

While youโ€™re exploring the park, consider basing yourself in the teeny town of Ashford, which offers a variety of restaurants, mountaineering and general stores, and accommodations. The Paradise Village Inn has updated rooms, an onsite restaurant, and, best of all, a wood-fired hot tub.

To get to Rainier, fly into Seattle and make the two hour drive southeast to the park. Just be sure to plug in the specific trailhead or location in the park you plan on going to into your GPSโ€”itโ€™s quite enormous and can take several hours to get from one point in the park to another.

8. Yosemite National Park, California

Located in the sunny state of California, Yosemite National Park is a nationally recognized โ€œgemโ€ that everyone should visit at least once in their life. The park is most easily accessible by car, with the closest airport being Fresno Airport. The park is absolutely stunning all year long, but is especially beautiful in the fall when the climate is cooler and there are less crowds.

Yosemite is known for its scenic hikes and sequoia and redwood trees. The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is located in the southern part of Yosemite and is a highly recommended day trip while visiting. The grove offers guided tours through the sequoias to view famous sequoias such as the โ€œclothespinโ€ sequoia or you can explore the grove by yourself.

Because of the cooler weather, hiking can be much more comfortable in Yosemite in the fall compared to other seasons. Some of the waterfalls in Yosemite disappear during summer when the glacial water dries up, but there are still many waterfalls to see in the fall! Vernal Falls can be admired year-round, with the best views being from the Mist Trail

For accommodations, there are a lot of options in every category. Camping is available on the park floor, but can be very challenging to secure a spot during busy times of the year. Rush Creek Lodge is a glamourous, rustic lodge that is a short distance from the park entrance that comes highly recommended. The resort contains a pool and a restaurant, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day exploring!

9. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree National Park in the California desert is one national park that is virtually off limits in the summer as the temperatures are truly unbearable and unsafe. Luckily, the fall is a great time to visit, especially in late October and November when the temperatures truly calm down.

Joshua Tree is known for their namesake โ€” Joshua trees โ€” that look like Dr. Seussian things with long, thick spiky branches with bulbous green leaves at the end. The park has even more to offer than simply a chance to see these trees.

For a couple recommended things to do, first, donโ€™t miss the Chola Cactus Garden, which is home to numerous species of plants that are only found there in the whole world! For hiking, Lost Horse Mine Trail has a good combination of Joshua trees, rock formations, and abandoned mining equipment providing an inside look at the parkโ€™s history with the Gold Rush.

Another trail not to miss is the Barker Dam Trail, where you can see petroglyphs from Native Americans that occupied the park before being forced out.

You can get to the park easily as a day trip from Los Angeles where the major airport is LAX (although BUR and ONT are good options to check). The closest airport is in fact Palm Springs.

I recommend finding a unique stay around the city of Joshua Tree like their UFO hotel or Hicksville Trailer Palace, which is like adult summer camp.

10. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

As summer transitions to autumn, Grand Canyon National Park showcases a breathtaking display of vibrant colors. The leaves of the diverse tree species transform into shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a surreal panorama against the majestic canyon walls.

During the fall season, the Grand Canyon hosts a variety of events and festivals, providing visitors with unique experiences. From photography workshops to guided hikes, thereโ€™s something for everyone.

The mild temperatures range from 60ยฐF to 80ยฐF and offer the perfect climate for exploring the park comfortably. With fewer crowds compared to the peak tourist season, you can better enjoy the tranquility and serenity of this natural wonder.

No matter the season, the Grand Canyon offers must-see sights and activities. Explore the popular South Rim, hike along scenic trails like the Rim Trail or the challenging Bright Angel Trail, and take a helicopter or sunset tour to witness the grandeur in a more unique way. Plus, the Grand Canyonโ€™s night skies offer a Dark Sky stargazing extravaganza!

And, you can enhance your stay inside the park by choosing El Tovar Lodge, located on the South Rim. This historic lodge offers rustic charm, breathtaking views, and a truly memorable experience.

Getting to the Grand Canyon is convenient, with the nearest airport being Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, just over an hourโ€™s drive away. Major cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas are also within driving distance, making the Grand Canyon easily accessible.

11. Zion National Park, Utah

One of the most beautiful places in Utah would have to be Zion National Park, and fall is an especially good time to visit Zion because the weather is cooler and itโ€™s less crowded compared to summer. The fall foliage can also be fantastic!

Even if youโ€™re not a hiker, the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway has amazing views of the park, so you can enjoy a lot of the scenery without leaving your vehicle. However, the park is home to some hiking trails that definitely belong on your bucket list.

Some of the best Zion hikes include Angels Landing, which is a cliff trail with chains you can hold, and The Narrows, which is like a giant slot canyon with the Virgin River flowing through it. Both of these places are amazing!

A great hotel near Zion is the Holiday Inn Express, which is right outside the park in Springdale. Zion National Park is located in far southern Utah, so itโ€™s not very close to any big cities, and it doesnโ€™t have its own airport. You can fly and drive from Las Vegas or Salt Lake City, or you can also fly to St. George or Cedar City.

Last, but not least, if you have more time to spare, you can get to Zion on a road trip through Utah, seeing all of the stateโ€™s five national parks!

12. Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

One of the most gorgeous destinations for fall foliage in the Southwest is hidden in a very unsuspecting spot in west Texas โ€“ Guadalupe Mountains National Park!  Surrounded by the vast Chihuahuan Desert, this unassuming autumn destination puts on a brilliant display in many of its canyon and forest hikes!

The best place to enjoy fall colors in the park is in McKittrick Canyon.  This popular trail contains a lush riparian oasis in the midst of the desert and towering mountains.  The brilliant autumn colors are largely due to the richly supported canyon environment that includes some rare trees that grow in McKittrick Canyon, including Texas madrone trees, with their deep red and magenta hued bark and evergreen leaves!

Besides these gorgeous gold, red, and purple colors of autumn, fall is the perfect time to enjoy Guadalupe Mountains National Park for several other reasons.

West Texas can get brutally hot in the summer, but fall brings welcome relief in the form of cooler temperatures and perfect hiking weather all day long, plus perfect camping weather all night long!  There are also fewer crowds and visitors, which means you can enjoy the peaceful trails and mountains, as well as more secluded camping under one of the darkest night skies in the country!

And no visit would be complete without hiking to the highest point in Texas at Guadalupe Peak!  Fall is the perfect time to hike this high altitude trail as the strength of the sun is gentler at the summit!

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in southwestern Texas.  The closest international airport is El Paso.  The closest cities are Dell City, Texas, and Carlsbad, New Mexico!  Carlsbad is a perfect home base because you can visit two national parks in the same trip, Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns!

For lodging inside the park, there are two developed campsites that are reservable online, the Pine Springs Campground and Dog Canyon Campground

Spooky US Cities to Visit in Autumn

13. Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, New York

There is no better place in the US to visit during fall than Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow in New York. Set along the Hudson River in the Hudson River Valley, Tarrytown offers plenty of things to do to enjoy the fall.

Take in the changing fall colors with a stroll along the RiverWalk (with gorgeous views of the Mario Cuomo Bridge) or the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. You can enjoy more fun outdoors with the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Farmerโ€™s Market, held Saturdays in Patriots Park through Thanksgiving.

Halloween lovers wonโ€™t want to miss the Great Jack Oโ€™Lantern Blaze held by the Historic Hudson Valley from mid-September through mid โ€“ November at the Van Cortlandt Manor. Over 7000 pumpkins are carved into impressive structures and works of art like the Headless Horseman Bridge and Statue of Liberty.

Speaking of the Headless Horseman, fans of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow will enjoy visiting Sunnyside, the estate of Washington Irving. Or if youโ€™d enjoy something grander, the Lyndhurst Mansion or the Rockefeller Estate might be more your style.

Tarrytown is easy to get from New York City and is a short drive or plane ride from La Guardia and JFK airports. And one of the best places to stay in Tarrytown is in a real castle! The Castle Hotel & Spa is located on one of the highest points in the area, giving you beautiful views of the Hudson River and keeping you close to all of the fun in town.

14. Salem, Massachusetts

If youโ€™re traveling north from Boston, or flying into Bostonโ€™s Logan Airport, make sure to visit Salem from Boston. This city offers a unique blend of historical significance and spooky charm. Fall is the best time to visit Salem to truly get in the spooky Halloween mood!

Explore the chilling history of the 1692 Witch Trials at the Salem Witch Trial Memorial and the Old Burying Point Cemetery, where victims were laid to rest. Take a guided walking tour or browse the intriguing shops dedicated to magic, witches, and monsters on the main street. This town is truly crazy about witches!

For more spooky fun, check out the locations featured in the Hocus Pocus film or join a ghost tour. Keep in mind that Salem during Halloween can be crowded and youโ€™ll see crowds of tourists in costume. If witches and magic are not your thing, visit the Peabody Essex Museum for a day of art, including a reconstructed ancient Chinese house.

Aside from its witchy history, Salem is also a historic seaport close to renowned whale-watching opportunities. Fall is some of the best time to view the whales without the crowds! Salem and nearby Gloucester in particular, is an ideal spot for whale watching with their vast waters and abundant marine life as itโ€™s rated one of the top 10 whale watching sites in the world! Whether from the shore or a boat, you can enjoy some of the best views of humpback whales, minke whales, northern right whales, pilot whales, or sperm whales.

Stay at the Hawthorne Hotel for easy walkable access to downtown Salem.

15. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is one of the best US destinations to visit in the fall. The weather is great, with fairly low humidity and average daytime temperatures of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The crispest fall weather doesnโ€™t really begin until the end of October in Savannah โ€“ which is perfect timing for Halloween! Considering itโ€™s one of the most haunted cities in the country, there are plenty of fun things to do this time of the year.

Savannah ghost tours are a fun activity year-round, but theyโ€™re even spookier in the fall when homes are decorated in their Halloween best. There are several cemetery tours and creepy haunted houses you can explore to get into the Halloween spirit. You might also enjoy a haunted bar crawl, where youโ€™ll visit different bars to learn more about the resident โ€œspiritsโ€ (and maybe even experience them firsthand).

Besides the haunted aspect of the city, there are several cultural activities to keep you busy, too. For example, you can learn more about Savannahโ€™s African American history at the Owens Thomas House and Slave Quarters or by visiting King Tisdell Cottage.

Wormsloe Historic Site, with its picturesque oak alley, is an ideal place to learn about the cityโ€™s colonial period.

Savannah is well connected with the rest of the country โ€” plus many worldwide destinations โ€” by plane at SAV/HHI International Airport. From there, you can reach the Historic District in less than 30 minutes by car. Uber, Lyft, and taxis are also readily available.

To maximize a fall trip, you might want to consider staying in a haunted hotel! The Marshall House makes a great choice, since itโ€™s centrally located near numerous shops and restaurants.

New Orleans is one of the most lively and fascinating cities in the United States. From its unusual history and origins to its cultural variety, itโ€™s a wonderful place to visit in the fall.

Weather can be tricky when traveling in the south, but fall in New Orleans will be mild and comfortable. With high temperatures in the 70s and 80s, itโ€™s the perfect time for outdoorsy types to kayak or paddle board at Bayou St. John or ride a bike through Esplanade Ridge.

Fall is festival time in New Orleans! Travelers visiting during this beautiful time of year might be lucky enough to catch the annual risque Burlesque Fest. Or the New Orleans Film Festival for the more academic types.

No matter the time of year, New Orleans is a really fun place to explore on foot. You canโ€™t visit this city without exploring the historic French Quarter and the haunting mansions of the Garden District. A river cruise on the Creole Queen is a New Orleans highlight too!

Many indulge in food while visiting the Big Easy. From beignets to jambalaya, there are so many mouthwatering dishes to try! And thereโ€™s no better way to wrap up your day than spending an evening in a soulful jazz club.

When it comes to places to stay, it doesnโ€™t get better than Canal Street Inn. This gorgeous bed and breakfast has a great mid-city location and is shrouded in beautiful greenery. Travelers will enjoy quaint staying rooms and even a spa at this location!

Many travelers make their way to New Orleans by plane via Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Bus routes from a variety of surrounding cities (Houston, Orlando, Atlanta, Nashville) transport visitors to New Orleans as well.

17. Big Bend National Park and Terlingua Ghost Town, Texas

For many reasons, Big Bend National Park is one of the best US destinations to visit in the fall. The parkโ€™s quiet desolation, clear dark skies, mountain views, and desert landscapes create a captivating allure. The fall weather offers warm days and brisk nights, making it ideal for hikers and campers. One of the best things about visiting in the fall is the lack of crowds. The park, trails, and lodging are often empty, providing a serene experience.

For non-hikers, there are miles of winding roads and scenic overlooks to explore. Adventurous individuals will find the hiking trails unforgettable, while off-road enthusiasts can conquer some of the best paths and rugged terrain in the park.

Big Bend National Park offers unique experiences to its visitors like soaking in the natural hot springs and crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico on the โ€œInternational Ferryโ€.  From the riverโ€™s edge visitors can enjoy a donkey ride into the town of Boquillas for lunch and shopping.

Nearby, the Terlingua Ghost Town is a must-visit destination. Visitors can shop at the trading post, explore the ruins, and have dinner at the Starlight Theater. The Terlingua Cemetery offers a breathtaking sunset in an unusual setting.

The first week of November is especially exciting in the Big Bend/Terlingua area. Visitors can celebrate Dia de los Muertos as the cemetery comes alive with costumed visitors paying tribute to the departed. Additionally, the world-famous Terlingua Chili-Cook Off, held on the first Saturday of November, offers music, vendors, and some of the best chili in the world.

Located 368 miles from El Paso International Airport in west Texas, visiting Big Bend requires driving as there is no public transportation available. For a one-of-a-kind glamping experience, accommodations are available at Camp Elena Luxury Tents just minutes away.

18. Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park is a quaint mountain town in Colorado that is known as the โ€œGateway to the Rockiesโ€ because of its proximity to the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. Less than a two hour from the Denver International Airport brings visitors from the bustling city to a respite in the mountains.

While picturesque any time of year, the fall season is when this quaint town really comes to life. Between the bright and bold colors of the aspen trees lining the streets and mountainsides, the elk rut when thousands of bull elk bugle their way through town in search of a female, and all the fall festivals held this time of year, Estes Park embodies the perfect fall destination.

When the weather begins to drop in this part of Colorado, the leaves in this region are triggered and really explode with color. Visitors will find hues from crimson to bright gold mixed in with the deep evergreen pine trees, creating that iconic autumn backdrop. The elk make their way down the mountains into the valleys in hoards in early October, and Estes Park celebrates this time of year with the famous โ€œElk Festโ€. Musicians, storytellers, vendors, food trucks, and more congregate to celebrate fall!

Donโ€™t miss venturing into Rocky Mountain National Park when visiting Estes Park. Whether you are an avid hiker looking for an adventure or simply enjoy a beautiful view, a drive along Trail Ridge Road offers travelers the best of both worlds.

And the best way to end a trip to Estes Park in the fall is by stopping at the infamous Stanley Hotel, where an eerie stay prompted author Stephen King to draft The Shining. Grab a drink at the historic bar and enjoy a seat on a rocking chair the spacious balcony overlooking the town of Estes Park.

19. Washington Cascades, Washington

As youโ€™ve read in this piece, Mt. Rainier is a fan favorite and shows off brilliant displays of color. Thankfully, itโ€™s not the only place in the state with surreal fall colors and amazing hikes.

If you head further north into the North Cascades, youโ€™ll find the incredible reds and oranges you see in Rainier. Youโ€™ll also enjoy stunning golden larches that live around 5,000 feet and are usually on the eastern slopes of the cascades. In the morning light, these views are some of the best in Washington.

Plus, youโ€™ll find the crowds in some of the classic locations to be a fraction of their amount, allowing you to recreate with more solitude.

Three of my favorite fall hikes in the North Cascades are Chain Lakes Loop, a 7-mile round trip hike, Cutthroat Pass, a moderately difficult 12-mile round trip trail, and Maple Pass, an 8-mile trip.

As for where to stay when you head to Washingtonโ€™s North Cascades for the best fall colors, here are three spots! Mazama is 3.5 hours from Seattle and is perfect for larches on the eastern side of the Cascades. Bellingham is just 90 minutes from Seattle and gives you great access to the Mt. Baker area. Finally, Lake Chelan is 4 hours from Seattle and opens up incredible lower elevation larch hikes.

As you hike and camp throughout the fall colors, remember the Leave No Trace principles to ensure others after you get to enjoy the same beautiful views as you were!

20. Leavenworth, Washington

If youโ€™re looking for a magical place to visit this fall โ€” look no further than Leavenworth, Washington.

Leavenworth is just over a two-hour drive from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, but youโ€™ll feel like youโ€™ve been whisked away into another world (or another country, to be exact). Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed village in the Cascade Mountains, so it will feel just like youโ€™re in Germany โ€” not the United States!

Leavenworth is a fabulous place to visit during the fall, especially in September and October. All the leaves are changing, and popular hiking trails, like the Colchuck Lake Trail and Icicle Ridge Trail, are bursting with colors. Visitors also come from across the country to experience the lively sights, sounds, and tastes of Oktoberfest in Leavenworth, usually held during the last weekend of September and the first two weekends of October.

The weather is beautiful during fall in Leavenworth, with high temperatures between 64ยฐโ€“78ยฐF. Take advantage of the gorgeous weather and sit outside at Munchen Haus or Icicle Brewing Company, some of the best places to eat in Leavenworth, to enjoy a craft beer or pretzel (traditional German fare!). Temperatures drop dramatically in November, so an early fall trip is best to experience the best of Leavenworth.

One of the best places to stay in Leavenworth is easily Posthotel. This luxury adults-only hotel offers stunning mountain views, a European breakfast, and access to the pool and wellness center with your stay. Itโ€™s also walking distance from all the action in Downtown Leavenworth, so itโ€™s a central location for a fall vacation โ€” even if youโ€™ll hardly want to leave this incredible hotel!

21. Boulder, Colorado

Boulder, in Colorado, is a fantastic destination to visit year round and especially beautiful in the fall. This lovely mid-sized city is located on a plain and right by the Rocky Mountains, with the Flatirons as its backdrop, and itโ€™s an incredible spot in the state to admire fall foliage.

There certainly are many things to do in Boulder, and most of them can be enjoyed in the fall months too. If you enjoy hiking, you really should not pass on the chance to hike Boulderโ€™s famous Flatirons. There are many trails you can pick from, of various difficulty levels and length, so surely you will find something that suits you.

Another unmissable place to visit is the University of Colorado at Boulder Campus. This is the largest university in Colorado, and needless to say fall is a great time of year to visit, when all the students are back at university for classes, and the grounds buzz with life. There are a few historic buildings here worth seeing. Among them, the 1876 Old Main, a Tuscan Vernacular Revival-style building; the Mary Rippon Theater, and Macky Auditorium which dates back to 1923.

Complete your visit of the area with a nice drive along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway for stunning views all around.

The best place to stay in Boulder is the Embassy Suites Hilton Hotel, where you will get large, comfortable rooms with views of the mountains. The nearest airport to Boulder is Denver International Airport, about 45 minutes away by car.

22. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Itโ€™s no secret that Jackson Hole, Wyoming is a major tourist destination owing to its convenient location just a 7-minute drive from the beautiful Grand Tetons National Park and an hourโ€™s drive from the iconic Yellowstone National Park. Ideal for whitewater rafting adventures, fly fishing, wildlife spotting, and hiking, Jackson Hole is a summer adventure loverโ€™s dream!

But, what many people donโ€™t know is Jackson Hole is actually an ideal destination for a fall getaway, as well. Not only does the autumn foliage of the region create a spectacular backdrop of gold, orange, and red, but itโ€™s also the best time to visit if you were hoping for fewer tourists in the national parks and downtown area. Autumn is when you can score amazing travel deals on flights and accommodations owing to it being the regionโ€™s off-season, so this is a great time to visit for budget-conscious travelers too!

Since many tourists hope to experience the townโ€™s vibrant summer festivities or winter ski scene,  the beauty of visiting in fall is often overlooked. Visitors who opt for an autumn trip will find that this is actually when the wildlife in the national parks are most active due to it being the season of โ€œthe rutโ€ for the local moose, elk, and other mammals.

Itโ€™s also when the town puts on the exciting Fall Arts Festival where local artists and craftsmen fill the streets with their very own booths and galleries to showcase their works! If you do decide to visit Jackson Hole in the fall, the Elk Country Inn is easily one of the best places to stay. Itโ€™s rustic, yet modern, and will definitely provide a chic continuation of the ongoing country vibe and nature theme youโ€™ll notice in the area.

If youโ€™re flying internationally, then the best way to get to Jackson Hole is to fly into Salt Lake City, Utah (SLC) and rent a car to make the sub-5-hour drive into town. Or, if youโ€™re flying domestically, then you can book a quick flight right into Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) where youโ€™ll only be a short 35-minute drive from the center of town.

23. Asheville, North Carolina

One of the best destinations to visit in the fall in the United States is Asheville, North Carolina. The city of Asheville is perfect for a fall getaway because of its vibrant fall foliage, perfect weather for brewery and winery hopping, impeccable mountain views, and endless things to see and do in the area.

Whether you are spending one perfect day in Asheville or you are looking to spend several days exploring this delightful mountain town, there are endless possibilities to embark on excursions, indulge in delicious foods, immerse yourself in the arts scene, and visit countless museums.

For craft beer lovers, be sure to check out some popular breweries around Asheville including The Funkatorium and Green Man Brewery

If you are more interested in exploring the local art scene, make sure to check out the River Arts District where you can take in the sights of countless vibrant murals on local warehouses and buildings and stop by endless art galleries and pottery shops throughout the area.

For one of the best accommodation options in Asheville, you must check out The Inn on Biltmore Estate. Not only does this hotel have a stunning interior and exterior but the surrounding landscape and amenities are top notch as well.

For those looking to plan your next fall getaway to the beautiful city of Asheville, the best option is to fly into Charlotte and then drive from there! The car ride takes about 2 hours in length but it is totally worth it due to the rich history, incredible art scene, scrumptious cuisine, and endless things to do in the gorgeous city of Asheville.

24. Boston, Massachusetts

One of the best places to visit in the fall in the US is the beautiful city of Boston.

Boston is a great place to visit in the fall as the weather is comfortable, the crowds are smaller than the busier summer months, and the colorful fall foliage is a worthy sight to be seen!

While visiting Boston make sure to take a stroll on the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is a marked path that connects all (or at least many) of the must see historical sites in the city. It shouldnโ€™t be missed!  Make a stop at Acorn Street to see one of the most photogenic streets in Boston.  And, of course, swing by Cheers to see the outside filming location of the popular show.

Boston is easily accessible by car, plane, bus and train. (The closest airport is BOS). Arriving without a car is no problem as the city is well connected by public transportation. Because of traffic and sometimes expensive/limited parking, it may actually be best to leave the car parked and use public transportation instead if arriving by car.

For a great place to stay in Boston consider booking at The Verb Hotel.  This hotel is conveniently located next to Fenway Park and comes with clean rooms and great reviews.

Enjoy your visit to beautiful Boston!

25. New York City, New York

New York is a year-round destination, but there is something particularly beautiful about the Big Apple during the Fall.

Fall in NYC has the most incredible fall colors, crisp fall weather, and endless cafes serving sweet, filling fall treats.

Must-visit attractions include experiencing the stunning fall foliage at Central Park, visiting several of the most iconic museums, and heading up to the top of one of New Yorkโ€™s observation decks. The Edge Observation deck has views over Central Park, so you can see all the lovely colors from above.

It goes without saying that visiting beloved landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the 911 Memorial is also well worth the visit.

Fall is also one of the least busy times of year for New York, which still has nice and comfortable weather. Just remember to pack an extra jacket.

There are endless hotels to stay in while in New York, which all boast different atmospheres. The Hyatt House Hotel in Chelsea is a great option as it is situated nearby to the Empire State Building and other popular landmarks. The hotel is also right by Penn Station, which will give you access to the subway all around the city.

To access the hotel, arrive at either LaGuardia Airport or JFK. Both are close to Manhattan and offer public transportation. Or, you can order a cab for more convenience.

26. Hudson Valley, New York

New Yorkโ€™s Hudson Valley is one of the best places to visit in fall for several reasons.

First of all, the fall foliage is nothing short of fabulous. Between the farms, the forests and the nature preserves, the entire area is ablaze with reds, golds and oranges. The hills change color sooner than the flat areas, and the northern part of the wide valley turns earlier than the southern regions near NYC, so from late September to early November, there is somewhere to enjoy the display. Popular spots include the adjacent Catskill Mountains, Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park.

The valley is also a hotspot for agritourism, especially in fall. There are plenty of farmerโ€™s markets on the side of roads selling seasonal fruits and apple cider donuts. Even better, though, are the orchards where you can pick your own apples or pears. Several such as Twin Star Orchards and Westwind Orchard also have a cidery where you can sample their cider and enjoy wood-fire pizza on a lawn near the orchard. Others like Hurds Family Farms are set up for family fun with hay rides, corn mazes, petting zoos, and more.

The easiest access for the Hudson Valley is New York City. The valley starts just north of the city and extends three hours north to Albany, the state capital. There is also a railway line that runs along the eastern shore of the river between the two cities. The area can be visited as a day trip from New York, but to fully enjoy all to has to offer, itโ€™s best stay overnight, or even longer.

A great place to stay is Mohonk Mountain House. A seemingly random hodgepodge of wood and stone buildings that look like they belong in a Harry Potter movie, the family resort is a great place to hike and enjoy the fall foliage.

27. Woodstock, Vermont

If youโ€™re looking for a fall getaway, Woodstock, Vermont is the perfect choice. Every autumn, this charming small town is surrounded by a beautiful mix of red, orange and yellow foliage.

The area around Woodstock is one of the best leaf-peeping destinations in the US, with foliage likely to reach its peak in the second or third week of October.

The village of Woodstock, dubbed โ€œThe Prettiest Small Town in America,โ€ is easy to explore on foot, but youโ€™ll want a car to see the highlights of the region including sights like Quechee Gorge, Billings Farm & Museum (sure to be a hit with kids) and Silver Lake, which is a great place for a kayak or canoe trip.

Every Wednesday evening through mid-October, the town of Woodstock comes together at a weekly market on the village green, in a scene that will make you think youโ€™ve been dropped into an episode of Gilmore Girls (nearby Royalton, Vermont played Stars Hollow in the showโ€™s opening credits).

Book a stay at the Woodstock Inn & Resort if itโ€™s in the budget. This beautiful property is right in the center of town, and includes complimentary bicycles and admission to the Billings Farm.

Woodstock is a little less than two hours from Burlington, Vermont and its international airport, and the drive is very scenic in the fall.

28. Burlington, Vermont

The vibrant city of Burlington, Vermont is stunning in the fall. The foliage is at its peak with the brilliant colors spreading across the hillsides. Lake Champlain, with magnificent views of the Adirondacks across the lake, is a primary attraction in Burlington. Take in the colors while enjoying a picnic at Waterfront Park.

For outdoor adventurers, admire the spectacular foliage by climbing the tower at Ethan Allen Park. This is one of many hikes in Burlington you can do to see a mosaic of reds, yellows, and oranges.

For a more active exploration, rent a bicycle in town to pedal the Burlington Greenway Bike Trail. You can cruise along the water and stop at several beautiful beaches along the way. The fall weather is perfect for cycling.

A cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen ship is another way to see the foliage from the lake. You will learn about the regionโ€™s rich history as well as enjoy the marvelous views. Couples will love the champagne cruise in the evenings.

A visit to the pedestrian mall of Church Street is a great way to see downtown Burlington. With its boutique stores, street performers, and restaurants with outdoor seating, you can spend a whole afternoon or evening there.

Reserve a room facing the lake at the Hilton Garden Inn and enjoy a spectacular autumn sunset on the water.

Burlington has an international airport or itโ€™s a reasonable drive from many East Coast cities.

29. White Mountains, New Hampshire

One of the absolute best places in the country to see fall foliage is in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire, and thereโ€™s no shortage of scenic drives, incredible hikes, and cozy places to stay during your visit.

In fact, the White Mountains region is home to some of the best things to do in New England in the fall, one of which is the gorgeous Artist Bluff trail. This moderate trail takes you to a viewpoint that overlooks Echo Lake, and from here, youโ€™re treated to one of the most amazing places to enjoy fall foliage color.

Nearby, youโ€™ll also want to hike the Flume Gorge trail, which passes over two beautiful covered bridges, and winds through a narrow chasm that provides a memorable experience. The rest of the path weaves through woods that are ablaze with fall color, and there are some great overlooks of the mountain vistas along the way.

During your fall visit, you also canโ€™t miss driving the famous Kancamagus Highway, which is considered one of the best fall foliage drives in the Northeast. The Kanc, as the locals call it, is a 56-mile long road that passes through the heart of the mountain region, offering fun stops along the way, including jaw-dropping overlooks, a covered bridge, amazing hiking trails, and waterfalls.

The best time for fall foliage in the White Mountains region is the end of September and early October. The closest major international airports are the Portsmouth Airport in New Hampshire, or Boston Logan in Massachusetts. Once you arrive at the airport, youโ€™ll need to rent a car to get around the area.

One of the coziest places to stay in the White Mountains is the Christmas Farm Inn in Jackson. Youโ€™ll be able to choose between standard rooms and cottages, and youโ€™ll also find a nice spa and restaurant on site.

30. Traverse City, Michigan

This Michigan beach town is a well-known summer playground, but it shouldnโ€™t be overlooked for its beauty, fun, and smaller crowds in the fall. The Traverse City area is blessed with an abundance of deciduous trees that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow during autumn. The kaleidoscope of colors, coupled with Lake Michiganโ€™s vibrant shades of blue, makes the area picture-perfect.

One of the best places to enjoy the scenic landscape is on the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Throughout the Lakeshore, there are plenty of scenic overlooks and hiking trails to take in the seasonโ€™s beauty.

Aside from taking in the areaโ€™s natural beauty, Traverse City is part of Michiganโ€™s wine country, and no trip is complete without going on a wine-tasting adventure. A few great wineries include Green Bird Organic Cellars, Mari Vineyard, Left Foot Charley, and Brys Estate Vineyard. In addition to wine, many of the wineries also produce cider which is perfect to enjoy in the fall.

When choosing where to stay, especially for first-time visitors, itโ€™s best to find a hotel on the water in Traverse City.

Delamar Hotel is one of the best places to stay for couples or families. This hotel is located on the water (not on the beach, but only a short walk) and features killer views of Grand Traverse Bay. Another bonus for staying here is that youโ€™re only steps from exploring downtown Traverse Cityโ€™s terrific boutiques, cafes, and restaurants.

If youโ€™re flying into the area, you can fly into the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, or the largest international airport is Detroit Metro which is a four-hour drive from Traverse City.

31. Nashville, Tennessee

For milder temperatures and seasonal festivities, Nashville is one the best places to visit in fall in the US! Whether youโ€™re traveling solo, with a partner, with family or on a girlsโ€™ trip to Nashville youโ€™ll find the autumn season is a great time to enjoy Music City.

Some of the best things to do in fall in Nashville include attending Oktoberfest in the Germantown neighborhood, having BOOze at the local Zoo and participating in the Nashville Film Festival in September.

Nashville also hosts a variety of fall music events, many of which are free to join. Check out Music in the Vines on weekends through October and the September Sundown concert series, to name a couple.

Of course, aside from fall-specific activities there are plenty of great things to do in Nashville year-round. Donโ€™t miss having a meal at Hattie Bโ€™s Fried Chicken, and be sure to bar hop along Broadway to enjoy a variety of live music. For a more intimate musical experience, head to Bluebird Cafe or the Listening Room.

If music history fascinates you, youโ€™ll love to spend some time exploring the different museums in Nashville as well.

A great option for where to stay when visiting Nashville is the eco-friendly Hutton Hotel. Located in downtown Nashville, itโ€™s a 10-minute walk away from Music Row. They also offer spa services, as well as have a live music venue on site. For a luxury stay, try the Conrad Nashville, a Hilton property with a fantastic on-site restaurant.

The best way to get to your destination is by flying into Nashville International Airport. From there, itโ€™s only a short 10ish minute drive into the downtown area.

32. Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee is a fantastic place to visit in the fall. Not only are the temperatures cooler, but there are a ton of fun events in the city that make it a perfect fall getaway.

First, there are a few music festivals in September and October including the Mempho Music Festival, the Memphis Fall Music Festival, and Gonerfest.

Because Memphis borders the Mississippi River, you can participate in Wine on the River in October where you get the chance to sample local and international wineries while traveling down the river on a boat.

Memphis is also home to a number of breweries, some of which have Oktoberfest celebrations. One of the most popular is Wiseacre Brewing Company. Plus, each year Memphis hosts a Brewfest in October where many breweries from around the city come together in a fun, boozy event.

Aside from fall festivities, there is lots to do for a Memphis weekend itinerary including visiting Graceland, Beale Street, Sun Studios, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and the Rock n Soul Museum.

To get to Memphis, you can fly into Memphis International Airport. Nashvilleโ€™s BNA Airport is another option, but is approximately 3 hours from Memphis.

Stay in the Moxy Hotel in downtown Memphis to be central to all the attractions.

33. Helen, Georgia

Each year visitors come from all over the world to this tiny Bavarian-themed village in Georgia to celebrate Oktoberfest and they go all out.

You can attend the ceremonial tapping of the keg on Munich time in their community hall.

Catch live music performances from the stage in the center of town or from many of the breweries, pubs, or restaurants. One great option is the Heidelberg, which is a restaurant, pub, and music hall.

During Oktoberfest, enjoy seasonal craft beer as well. Be sure to try German food like brats, pretzels, and more from Bodensee and Mullerโ€™s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe.

In September, you can also โ€œshoot the Hoochโ€œ, which is code for tubing down the Chattahoochee River, a popular activity when the weather is warm. Helen also has mini golf, a mountain roller coaster, and lots of great shops!

One place to stay in Helen that stays on theme is the Heidi Motel complete with a windmill.

To get there, youโ€™ll need to fly into Atlanta, rent a car, and drive 1.5 hours to the northeast. It might sound cumbersome, but Helen and the surrounding area of north Georgia is worth the trip!

34. Athens, Georgia

Fall in Athens, Georgia is quite an experience because of college football. The local team is the Georgia Bulldogs for the University of Georgia (my alma mater) and they recently won back-to-back national championships!

Itโ€™s no wonder that during weekends in the fall, Athens comes alive with energy, support, and camaraderie as the whole town cheers on the team.

If you can score tickets to a home game in Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium, itโ€™s quite the experience. Even without tickets to a game, you can still participate in the fun. Head downtown to one of the many bars and eateries that broadcast the game. A favorite is All Good where they have a rooftop bar and pool tables.

Alternatively, head to one of Athensโ€™ breweries that theyโ€™re famous for to catch the game and celebrate. Creature Comforts is a downtown favorite, but Terrapin and Southern Brewing Company are more removed from the center of town if you want to celebrate away from the crowds.

Aside from football games, thereโ€™s a lot to do in Athens.

Athens is a music town, the former home of REM and the B-52โ€™s, so catch a local show to potentially be part of history. The Georgia Theatre, 40 Watt Club, The Foundry, and Live Wire are all good choices.

To get to Athens, fly into Atlantaโ€™s Hartsfield Jackson Airport, rent a car (or take the Groome Shuttle), and drive 1.5 hours to Athens.

Lodging books up fast and can be expensive for football weekends, so itโ€™s best to book as early as possible. I recommend the Graduate or Homewood Suites downtown if you want a fun Bulldog themed stay.

35. Madison, Wisconsin

Madison, Wisconsin is the perfect place in the US to visit in the fall. Youโ€™ll love the vibrant colors of the changing of the leaves, the snap in the air as the weather cools off, and fun local festivals.

Donโ€™t miss the stunning Thai Pavilion with its incredible gold leaf dรฉcor.

One of the best things to do in Madison is to tour the Capitol Building.  Madison is the capital of Wisconsin, and the Capitol is incredible! Itโ€™s free to tour and be sure to head up to the domeโ€™s observation deck to enjoy the 360-degree views of Madison.

Time your visit right and enjoy local festivities such as the Taste of Madison, or the fun Thirsty Troll Brewfest in nearby Mount Horeb. Or cheer on the home team at a Badger football game.

To reach Madison, you can fly into the Dane County Regional Airport. However, it may be more convenient to fly into larger international airports in Milwaukee (about 1.25 hours away) or Chicago (about a 2-hour drive).

Stay at the Madison Concourse Hotel and Governorโ€™s Club. Itโ€™s located right next to the Capitol building, so you can enjoy the stunning Capitol views as well as easy access to dining and entertainment options on State Street.

The weather during this time of the year is usually nice and not too hot. With average temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the low 80s Fahrenheit, it offers a comfortable temperature to explore the city and enjoy outdoor activities without feeling too hot or sweaty.

The fall season is also a great time to visit Orlandoโ€™s famous theme parks. Since the summer vacation rush is over, the parks are less crowded. You can have more fun because youโ€™ll be spending less time waiting in lines.

At Walt Disney World in Disneyโ€™s Magic Kingdom, youโ€™ll find the park decked out in fall decor. Mickeyโ€™s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is also celebrated on select nights. Over at EPCOT, theEPCOT International Food & Wine Festival is going on. Itโ€™s a chance to try different foods and drinks from all around the world.

At Universal Orlando Resort the popular Halloween Horror Nights takes place in the fall.

Outside the theme parks, fall in Orlando is also the perfect time for outdoor activities. You can kayak on the Wekiva River or explore the hiking and biking trails.

Whether you like food, thrills, and nature, or just want to escape the colder weather, Orlando has something for everyone during the fall.

37. Nantucket, Massachusetts

One of the best places to visit in fall in the US is Nantucket. Itโ€™s a great place to visit during this season because there are much fewer crowds. This means accommodation and restaurant reservations are much easier to acquire.

The island of Nantucket is off the southern coast of Massachusetts, but it is easy to get to. From the town of Hyannis on Cape Cod, a ferry to Nantucket takes about an hour.

During the fall season, Main Street goes all out with decorations so itโ€™s easy to get in the spirit. There is also a Halloween parade and pumpkin carving at Bartlettโ€™s Farm.

Of course, any trip to Nantucket would be incomplete without a visit to Brant Point Lighthouse. Itโ€™s just outside of town, but easy to walk to. Brant Point is the second oldest light station in the country and although the lighthouse isnโ€™t open to the public, the grounds are. Nantucket also has historic museums, charming shops, and delicious seafood restaurants.

For your visit, consider staying at 21 Broad. It is located in Nantucketโ€™s Downtown Historic District, only minutes away from the ferry terminal and popular attractions. They also have a spa and breakfast is included.

38. Maui, Hawaiโ€™i

If you are looking for a fabulous fall getaway with lots of sun, sand, and sea, consider Maui! Fall is one of the less expensive times of the year to visit the Hawaiian islands, and crowds are a little less than in the summer or the winter.

It does not usually start raining in earnest on Maui until November, but pack rain gear just in case, especially if you visit the eastern side of the island.

Visitors can also see the Na Pali Coast via a boat tour or hike the Kalalau Trail within Haena State Park. The 11-mile trail is considered one of Hawaiiโ€™s most challenging yet rewarding hikes, offering magnificent views of the coastline and sea caves.

Donโ€™t forget to make time for some relaxation during your stay! When youโ€™re done exploring the islandโ€™s breathtaking nature, take a day to unwind on one of Kauaiโ€™s beautiful beaches. You can catch some rays at Hanalei Beach or dip in the perfect blue waters of Poipu Beach, one of the best beaches in Kauai.

Waimea Canyon is also a must-see during your visit to the islands. Itโ€™s nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and offers fantastic views of its unique formations, ranging from vibrant reds and oranges to lush greens.

Kayaking the Wailua River is another canโ€™t-miss experience in Kauai. The Wailua River is home to many waterfalls and lush rainforests.

One of the best places to stay on Kauai is the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa, located in Poipu, about a 25-minute drive from the Lihue Airport. This beachfront resort offers incredible amenities, including a championship golf course, multiple pools, restaurants, and more.

40. Denali, Alaska

Although the fall brings lots of rain to Alaska, youโ€™ll enjoy the pristine landscapes with fewer people by visiting in the off-season.

A trip to Denali National Park is popular on many one-way cruises to Alaska. Holland America and Princess Cruises offer the best cruise options to Alaska since they have traveled there the longest.

Alternatively, you can fly into Anchorage International Airport and take the train to the park. The 234-mile route offers jaw-dropping scenery from domed-topped carriages.

Located in the mountains, you canโ€™t go wrong with a stay at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. With a few in-house restaurants and a large terrace to soak in the views of the towering Denali, it provides the perfect stay for a wilderness adventure.

In the fall, youโ€™ll have an opportunity for wildlife viewing. Bears are foraging for food for winter hibernation, and visitors commonly spot moose on bus tours.

The highlight of any trip to Alaska is seeing the majestic aurora borealis or northern lights. To witness the event, you must be away from light pollution; the skies must be clear, with high aurora activity. Some hotels will give wake-up calls if the aurora happens.

Since you cannot drive a car beyond mile 15, youโ€™ll need to explore the park through tours. With plenty of choices, you can pick a short four-hour history excursion or take a 12-hour adventure that requires getting up at 4 am.

A must-do, the Wilderness Tundra Tour provides a 6-hour narrated journey through unspoiled lands. Youโ€™ll travel to mile 43, with a chance to see black bears, grizzlies, wolves, moose, and snow-covered Denali.

41. San Francisco, California

Despite San Franciscoโ€™s reputation for thick foggy weather all year, the best time to visit is in the fall! Believe it or not, it is warmer during fall than during the summer. San Francisco experiences an โ€œIndian Summerโ€ from September to November when the skies clear up, the temperature rises and there is little to no rain.

When fall rolls around, Bay Area locals flock to San Francisco to watch sea lions at Pier 39, hike at Landโ€™s End, relax at Golden Gate Park, or take a stroll on Ocean Beach, all of which make perfect date ideas for couples.

If youโ€™re looking for autumnal-specific activities, you can visit Alcatraz at night for a spooky tour, watch the 49ers football game at Leviโ€™s Stadium in Santa Clara, or head over to Half Moon Bay to visit the pumpkin patches.

Itโ€™s best to stay near the Embarcadero, where you are near the Ferry Building to try some of the best foods, Pier 39, or Oracle Park to watch the San Francisco Giants game in early September.

For a total luxury experience, stay at Hyatt Regency San Francisco, where you have sweeping views of the Embarcadero waterfront and Bay Bridge. You can also dine in their restaurant, Eclipse Kitchen and Bar, which offers New American fare, seafood fresh from the Bay, California wine, charcuterie boards, and signature cocktails.

42. Lake Tahoe, California

For a majestic fall vacation in the United States, consider heading to Lake Tahoe, which sits right in between California and Nevada (North Lake Tahoe is in Nevada, while South Lake Tahoe is in California.) Fall is the ideal time to visit Lake Tahoe, because of far fewer crowds than the summer and typically, the end of โ€˜fire seasonโ€™ which often occurs in August.

In Lake Tahoe in fall, the weather can be a bit cooler, with an average high of 59ยฐF in October. Be sure to pack some warm clothes to enjoy the early sunsets โ€“ another bonus of visiting Tahoe in the fall.

Lake Tahoe has a wealth of outdoor adventures that allow you to indulge in the beautiful scenery โ€“ kayaking on the crystal-clear lake where you can see down to the bottom, chartered boat tours and hiking. In the fall, youโ€™ll have an easier time parking at many of these activities. Be sure to check out the Impossible Trail, which runs along the east shoreline, giving you picturesque views of the lakes and the mountains.

South Lake Tahoe has a variety of activities year round, such as a gondola that will take you 2.4 miles to the top of a mountain, an old fashioned movie theatre, and the historic 100-year old Tallac Home. Be sure to drive through Emerald Bay to enjoy the most scenic lookouts in the area, and visit the Vikingsholm Castle

Lake Tahoe is very family-friendly, but also makes for a great destination for couples and solo travellers. Many Americans drive to Lake Tahoe as a road trip, but if you live further than a few hours away, then youโ€™ll want to fly into Reno, the closest airport. From there, itโ€™s a 45 minute drive to Lake Tahoe. You can rent a car from the airport.

To get the best experience in Lake Tahoe, consider staying at the Marriott Grand Residence, located right in Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe. This hotel is steps away from the gondola, movie theatre, restaurants, cafรฉs and many of the attractions open in fall.

43. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is one of the best places to visit in the fall in all of the United States. One of the biggest reasons why Sedona is so great in the fall is because the weather is absolutely gorgeous at that time of the year. You can expect temperatures to be in the mid 70s and evening temperatures to be in the mid 50s or 60s.

There are a ton of things to do in Sedona but of course one of the best things to do is go hiking. Hiking the trails in Sedona are super rewarding with gorgeous views around every corner. And in the fall the cooler temperatures make hiking more enjoyable. Hiking Devilโ€™s Bridge Trail and Cathedral Rock are two popular picks.

Another great thing to do in the fall in Sedona is go camping. There are a ton of beautiful Sedona campgrounds to choose from and the cooler temperatures make the experience just that much better.

If youโ€™re not up for camping, one of the best places to stay in Sedona is the Wilde Resort & Spa. This resort has gorgeous views of the red rocks, a lovely outdoor area with a pool, and a heavenly spa to relax at.

The best way to get to Sedona is to fly into either Phoenix or Flagstaff airport. From Phoenix itโ€™s only a 2 hours drive to Sedona and from Flagstaff itโ€™s less than an hour drive.

44. Las Vegas, Nevada

Vegas makes for a great fall getaway, with lower daytime temperatures and lower crowds than in the summer. The weather is wonderful especially in mid and late fall.

One of the best things to do on the Las Vegas Strip is to just stroll the street to gawk at all the resorts, no matter when you visit. Fall evenings are perfect to soak in the lights and ambience! Stop to watch the fountain show at the Bellagio and snap photos of the Eiffel Tower replica.

During the day, when it can be warm to wander outdoors, seek the cool interiors of the resorts, where you can ogle art or shop. For a special experience, take an indoor gondola ride in the Venetian!

Be sure to make reservations for shows youโ€™d like to see, and for dinner at fine dining places. O by Cirque du Soleil is an excellent choice!

The Las Vegas Food and Wine Festival is a multi-day food festival that usually happens in October each year.

Outside of the Strip, there is lots of nature to explore near Vegas. Go hiking at Red Rock Canyon early or late in the day, or take a longer trip out to Zion National Park to see fall colors. Later in the fall, you can also explore the gorgeous Valley of Fire State Park or Death Valley National Park.

Stay in the heart of the action at the Bellagio. The resort offers stellar accommodations and many topnotch eateries on site. Itโ€™s a short taxi ride from the Las Vegas International Airport.

Moab, Utah is a red rock playground home to endless hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor adventures. Fall is a great time of year to visit Moab because temperatures are mild. During the summer temperatures regularly soar to over 100ยฐF, but during the fall highs are typically in the mid 60s-low 80s. Cottonwood trees, which grow along the banks of rivers and streams, also turn from green to gold during the fall, providing some unique foliage against a desert backdrop.

Both parks have a variety of hiking trails to choose from whether youโ€™re looking for something family-friendly or an epic backcountry experience. Top trails include Delicate Arch, Devils Garden, Mesa Arch, and the Syncline Loop.

You can also head to Dead Horse Point State Park for dog-friendly views that rival Canyonlands.

Camping is plentiful around Moab, but if youโ€™re looking for cushier accommodations stay at the Sorrel River Ranch. Located right on the banks of the Colorado River, Sorrel River Ranch combines a luxury resort experience with epic adventures, offering activities like rafting, horseback riding, and off-roading to guests.

Moab has a small regional airport in town with a limited number of flights available. For greater flight availability either fly into Grand Junction, Colorado, (a 90 minute drive) or Salt Lake City, Utah (a 4 hour drive). Driving from Denver, Colorado, takes approximately 6 hours.

Accommodations often cost less money at this time of year as there is less demand, so it is ideal for the budget-conscious traveler. The Florida Keys consist of several islands, with Key West being the southernmost and most well-known destination.

Donโ€™t worry even with milder temperatures, there are still lots of amazing outdoor activities to enjoy as the temperature ranges from the mid-70s to low 80s. Not only is it an ideal time to enjoy the outdoors in nearby Fort Williams State Park and the Eastern Promenade with fewer tourists around and tons of vibrant foliage, but there are also plenty of activities throughout the season to keep you entertained!

From whale-watching expeditions along Casco Bay (Odyssey Whale Watch is a top-rated company) to trying the best pumpkin beer with a cinnamon-sugar rim at one of the local breweries (Bissell Brothers is a popular favorite), thereโ€™s something for everyone during this time of year.

50. Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina Island is one of the most beautiful places to visit in California during fall. It is surrounded by lush greenery and meadows, which makes it a perfect place to see fall colors.

You can hike around the island or rent a golf cart to wander around the island. This way you can meet the native plants available in the island. As a matter of fact, Catalina Island is the home to several endemic species of plants, which means you cannot find them anywhere else, but on the island, such as St. Catherineโ€™s Lace, Catalina Liveforever, Catalina Beddtraw, and Catalina Figwort.

There plenty of things to do in the Island beside hiking and seeing fall foliage, such as zip lining and parasailing.

My favorite activity of them all is parasailing. As you get pulled by a motorboat, you catch glimpse of the beauty Catalina has to offer. You get the chance to see it from the birdโ€™s eye. The view from above is spectacular. It sure can take your breath away.

On the other hand, zip lining is another adventurous adrenaline pumping activity. As you zigzag across Catalina Island at speed of 35 mile per hour, you can look at the beauty of the Island.

To get to the Island, you can book a passenger ferry at Los Angeles Mainland Port either with Catalina Express or with Catalina Flyer. On the other hand, you can also book a helicopter ride with IEX Helicopters. Both passenger ferry and helicopter ride are fun ways to explore the surrounding water before reaching Catalina Island. It depends on your preference. It takes around 45 minutes by a passenger ferry and 15 minutes by a helicopter.

Catalina Seacrest Inn is one of the most affordable lodging options with rooms starting at $185 per night, since the island is typically an expensive getaway.
