Feel like going to the mountains? A three and a half hour drive. Craving the sounds of the ocean and sand beneath your toes? Another three and a half hour drive. Raleigh is perfect for planning last minute day trips!

Umstead State Park is practically Raleigh’s backyard escape when city life gets on your last nerve and is a great start for those just dipping their toes into day tripping. Miles of shady trails and easy-access picnic areas offer a relaxing break without having to venture too far.
But here’s something even locals might not realize: hidden within the park are the ruins of 19th-century homesteads and mills, complete with old stone chimneys and foundations quietly whispering stories from the past. You might be hiking past history without even realizing it.
