Studying abroad is one of the best experiences you can have in college and is often more affordable than you might think with exchange tuition programs (ask your study abroad office)! But where to go? If you’re studying a language, it can be an obvious choice, but often times it’s not that easy. Luckily, I’ve consulted travel bloggers to share their study abroad destinations and why you should consider these best study abroad cities for your experience!

Probably the most popular region for studying abroad is Europe with a seemingly never-ending list of study abroad destinations, it’s no wonder so many students end up in Europe for their study abroad experience. Here are a number of top picks to choose from and why!

1. Lisbon, Portugal

One of Europe’s great cities – and the original home of one of the continent’s oldest institutions, the University of Coimbra (founded in 1290) – Lisbon is a dream destination for studying abroad.

Portugal’s capital is a gorgeous city, cosmopolitan, dynamic, and overwhelmingly safe. The cost of living in Lisbon is manageable for anyone on a student budget.

There are a multitude of housing options, including apartment sharing options, plus you can take advantage of the reliable, low-cost public transport network and the many budget-friendly restaurants, cafes and bars in the city. Thrifting and flea markets are very popular in Lisbon, so you can easily find wonderful Portugal souvenirs and gifts for your family back home.

With plenty of green spaces, it’s easy to stay active in Lisbon – especially if you join a social football club. Many of the city’s museums and galleries offer student discounts, and on the first Sunday of every month, the National Museum of Archaeology and others have free entry.

Other activities include cooking classes, food tours, and pastel de nata workshops where you can master the art of Portuguese custard tarts – a life skill you can take with you anywhere!

Lisbon has a great nightlife scene, with everything from intimate Fado houses to pumping clubs. English is widely spoken, especially among people under 30, which makes it easy to get around and to meet people.

The pace of life in Portugal might take some getting used to – especially the break in the middle of the day – but you will soon learn to love those long lunches and relaxed evenings spent drinking with friends.

2. Graz, Austria

The city of Graz is definitely one of the coolest cities to study abroad. It is considered to be one of the best cities to live in Austria and thrills with many interesting attractions as well as magnificent buildings, lots of culture and events. There are so many unique things to do in Graz and on top, most museums offer discounts for students.

There is also a wide range of universities to choose from, with the University of Graz, founded in 1585, being one of the largest and most important academic institutions in Austria.  There are currently more than 32,500 students here.

The university also participates in many study abroad programs, such as Erasmus+ mobility, Erasmus+ International, ISEP, Joint Study, Utrecht Network Mobilities outside of Europe, CEEPUS and Town Twinning grant Graz-Montclair (application via Joint Study).

Nightlife in Graz is really cool, where for students the UNI quarter is the place to be. Here you will find the hippest bars and clubs where you can party until the morning. In addition, there are numerous restaurants and fast food in that area that offer food at a reasonable price.

The location of Graz is also fantastic, from where you can explore some of the best places in Austria. It is only about 2 hours away from the Austrian capital, Vienna. But you can also go to Slovenia, where for example Maribor is only 1 hour away.

3. Vienna, Austria

Vienna, Austria is a fantastic place to study abroad. The capital city has so much to offer and you will never have a dull moment. The university options are vast and varied so no matter the field of study, there will be a place to enroll. 

Vienna has quite a few well known universities and each of them have their specialty. Three of the biggest public universities are University of Vienna, Vienna University of Technology and the prestigious Medical University of Vienna.

They also have a private international school at Webster University in addition to the famous Sigmund Freud private university, both having excellent psychology programs. The musical community also has multiple options of schools in this classical city. 

Nightlife in Vienna is thriving. Whether your interest is bars, pubs, rooftops or clubs there are plenty of options in this city. It is important to remember the drinking age in Austria is 16 so there may be a younger crowd at many of the places.

Some recommended bars are The Sign, Krypt, Beaver Brewing, and Needle Vinyl. For clubs, try Volksgarten, Platzhirsch, Grelle Forelle, Praterdome, and Donau. Finally, rooftop bars are also popular including Lamée, Aurora, Organics Sky Garden, Das Loft, and 25 Hours Hotel.

There is a decent expat community in Vienna seeing as there are lots of universities as well as foreign business headquarters. While some believe that Austrians are not the most welcoming bunch, depending on which school you attend you may find the younger crowds more open. However, fear not as you can join Facebook groups to help you get settled and meet new friends. Try Foreigners in Vienna, Americans in Vienna, and individual university Facebook groups.

Vienna is one of the most historic and culturally preserved cities in the world. The number of main sites such as the Rathaus, Parliament, St Stephens Cathedral, Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace, and Belvedere Palace are all standing true to original form and glory. Many of these locations are completely free to visit or offer student discounts with a valid ID.

If you are a history buff and want to dive deeper into the culture, there are many museums to visit. You can stroll through Museumquartier and visit multiple back-to-back. Vienna host Lange Nacht Der Museen which is The Long Night of Museums every year where you can enter over 100 museums with a single ticket. Usually this cost around 15 euros but you also can receive a student discount. 

Vienna is a very well-located city with an international airport that has flights to every country. It also has an amazing train system with yearly memberships that have a huge discount for students and those under the age of 26. You can take the train to lots of major cities for the day or a weekend such as Salzburg in Austria, Budapest in Hungary, Bratislava in Slovakia, and Zagreb in Croatia.

Northern Italy, Germany and Switerzland are also all easily accessible. 

Flying to Rome, Paris, Berlin or Barcelona is quick trip as well. Basically, all of Europe is at your fingertips. 

Vienna is one of the best options for a study abroad program for so many reasons. It has been named the best city to live in for 3 out of the last 5 years and appropriately so.

4. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a great city for studying abroad. The Spanish city is known for being vibrant, sunny, and multicultural.

Apart from many famous historical landmarks, Barcelona also is located by the beach. The city is rich in history and offers a stunning diversity of things to do and plenty of great food choices.

Not only is spending leisure time in Barcelona fun, but the universities also enjoy a great reputation. The University of Barcelona, Pompeu Fabra University, and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia are some of the best universities in the country.

Mingle with 63.000 other students in one of the many bars and restaurants after class and enjoy the outstanding cosmopolitan atmosphere. Foreign students love Barcelona for a semester abroad because they offer lots of English programs and courses.

While most things are a little more expensive in Barcelona than in the rest of Spain, they are still considered cheap in a European comparison. Most museums and attractions offer student discounts. Also, most of Barcelona’s universities offer great student housing on campus, which is also affordable.
Make sure to enjoy the nightlife in the Barrio Raval, for the ultimate student experience. Great free things to do in Barcelona are the Montjuïc Magic Fountain Show, visiting Las Ramblas, and taking a walking tour of Gaudis architecture.

5. Granada, Spain

Granada is one of the best cities in Spain for students. Youths from all over Europe choose Granada to come and study to not just for the great University, but also for the cheap prices as well as fantastic nightlife.

Granada is home to Spain’s fourth most prestigious university. Besides studying here, Granada is also a great place to start learning and practice your Spanish. Even if Granada is an old city with a long heritage, it has a very young spirit. Granada itself is a university city, with 10% of the students being international. 70,000 of the 240,000 people living in Granada are students.

Granada is a fantastic city to live in, with plenty of activities and events taking place all the time. The city is located at the foothills of Sierra Nevada mountains, 30 minutes away from the ski slopes and 40 minutes away from the sea. You couldn’t get a better location.

Granada is also a very friendly city, with welcoming locals. The city itself is very affordable as well, especially regarding accommodation prices, and eating out. In Granada, every time you order a drink you will receive a free tapa. The more you order, the better the tapas will be. Drinks are affordable, starting at less than 2 euros for a glass of house wine.

If you are a student at the local University, visiting Granada becomes very cheap. Students in Granada benefit of many discounts for the touristic attractions in the city, as well as some tours which they can join for free by showing their student card.

6. Málaga, Spain

Malaga is a stunning coastal city in the south of Spain. 7. Salamanca, Spain

You may not have heard of Salamanca, Spain; it’s not a major tourist destination.  However, if you were to ask a Spainard what the most iconic university town in Spain is, they would probably say Salamanca.  Afterall, the University of Salamanca was founded way back in 1218 and is the oldest Hispanic university in the world.  It is known for its language and teaching programs and many students, both college age and older adults come here to study Spanish as a foreign language.

Salamanca is a relatively small city, with a population of less than 150,000.  This means that the city revolves around the university.  There are lots of student discounts to be found at most restaurants and bars (2 euro glass of wine, anyone?).  

The heart of the city is the main square or the Plaza Mayor.  You’re bound to see tunas in traditional dress here.  These groups of students play and sing serenades and enjoy a few beers while they do it.  

Just about everything in Salamanca is walking distance from the Plaza Mayor and the university.  Don’t miss seeing the gothic-style Casa de las conchas, the cathedral and other notable buildings around the city.

8. Valencia, Spain

Valencia is a great place for students to study abroad. London, England is one of the absolute best cities in which to study abroad. Known for its rich history and bustling city life, London is a wonderful mix of old and new. There are myriad reasons studying abroad in London makes for an unforgettable experience.

As an English speaker, you don’t have to worry about learning a new language or being unable to communicate. Besides deciphering between chips being french fries and crisps being chips, you’ll find communication extremely easy in London, and England as a whole.

10. Southampon, UK

Located on the southeast coast of England, just 79 km from London, Southampton offers students an unbeatable combination of urban energy and coastal beauty. 12. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the perfect place for students looking to study abroad! Rich in history and culture, it offers plenty of activities and sights to experience.

With four different universities to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect one for your needs – whether you’re looking to experience life in Dublin in the bustling city or staying in the suburbs with a host family.

The top-tier university in Ireland is Trinity College Dublin. It sits in the heart of the city center, providing students with a world-renowned education from one of the oldest universities in Europe. Not only will you have access to world-class courses and teaching, but the student community is excellent. There are dozens of societies (school clubs) to join on campus for every interest from history and debates to rock climbing and adventuring.

13. Leuven, Belgium

The small Belgian town of Leuven, just a 20-minute train ride from Brussels,  is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe – KU Leuven. It is home to a vibrant international community, with more than 20% of students coming from outside Belgium. Many of them are study-abroad students at Erasmus and various other exchange programs all over the world, as tuition fees in Belgium are a fraction of those in the USA.

When you come to Leuven, you’ll feel like you entered a college campus with a medieval background of one of the most stunning Belgian towns. You can bike everywhere, and there are almost no cars in the city centre. University buildings are all over this bike-friendly town, with plenty of student associations, lunch spots and casual bars to hang out in – it makes you feel like it was made for students. 

Belgium is a great study-abroad country for those who like travel, as it is so well-connected! You can go on a day trip to Ghent, Bruges or Antwerp in less than an hour. With fantastic value train passes for people under 26, a one-way ticket to anywhere in Belgium will cost you less than 6€ per trip. 

Students in Belgium have a lot of unique student traditions. For example, cantus. It is an event where you drink beer and sing old songs, you have to see it to believe it! In Belgium, the drinking age is 18, and the most popular student drink is beer – a perfect spot to grab one in Leuven is the Oude Markt, also known as the longest bar.

14. Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is one of those overlooked cities in Europe. While the travel geeks let their curiosity unfold in the corners of Amsterdam or Paris, Brussels stays unexplored and less rushed.

Its architecture, culture, and gastronomy make it the city perfect for students. Additionally, Brussels is known for its cultural diversity and is a great place to meet and network with people from around the world. 

Brussels is an affordable city to live in, with a lower cost of living than many other European cities. People can also plan day trips from Brussels to destinations like Bruges and Ghent because of its close connectivity to these cities. All of these factors make Brussels an attractive study destination for those looking for an enriching educational experience.

College students also get to explore so much. To begin with, there is the Grand Palace. Located in the heart of Brussels, the Grand Place is a beautiful cobblestone square filled with stunning architecture and a vibrant atmosphere. Take a stroll through this historic area and marvel at the grandeur of the buildings. 

After that, explore Atomium. Built for the 1958 World’s Fair, this is a unique structure in the shape of a three-dimensional atom. Take the elevator to the top of the structure for magnificent views of the city.

Visit the Royal Palace of Brussels. This beautiful building is the official residence of the King and Queen of Belgium with hefty insights into the history.

15. Nice, France

Studying abroad in Nice, in the South of France, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To be able to live by the sea and soak up the sunshine during your study breaks is hard to beat, especially if you come from a home country with a cooler climate.

Nice is home to many learning facilities, so the town is catered to students. However, there is also a good mix of locals and tourists to experience a diverse community.

Nice is a great town to live in, with its stunning beach promenade and cultural Old Town. It also has numerous exceptional restaurants suited to all budgets. However, if you are looking to explore a little further afield during your days off studying, there are plenty of other unique destinations in its vicinity.

For example, you can take the train to Monaco in 20 minutes or continue further to Menton, the last town before the Italian border, famous for its Lemon Festival.

You can leave all your winter clothing at home because the temperature in Nice is typically warm enough to wear a light jacket throughout winter. Unless you are looking for a change of scenery and to make the most of the cheap flights around Europe.

Nice is a short distance from incredible ski resorts with a 1-hour low-cost flight to Geneva. Alternatively, take the 100% Neige Bus from Nice to Auron, which takes 2 hours each way, and spend the day skiing. If you show your student card, you will get a discount on the lift pass.

Make sure you sign up to get unlimited public transportation on the Lignes d’Azur network with a monthly subscription for students. You can also subscribe to the bike-share system “Velo Bleu” to cycle to your classes or see the city from a different perspective.

16. Paris, France

One of the best places to study abroad is Paris. Although the French capital is far from perfect, there are so many opportunities for students to get out of their comfort zone and discover themselves.

For example, a nice advantage of choosing to study in Paris is that there is always something happening somewhere. Whether there’s a fashion show going on, a free outdoor concert, or a pop-up art exhibit, students can always expect something new to do and explore in Paris.

Moreover, with so many bars, clubs, restaurants, and markets, the food options are limitless. If you’re willing to do a bit of research prior, you’ll discover that the city can truly accommodate a variety of budgets. Not to mention, there’s a great public transportation network that can help you get around the city or even travel beyond Paris relatively easily.

Finally, one of the best parts is that you can take advantage of all the student discounts. Practically every museum offers either significantly reduced, if not free admission with your student ID card. This makes a huge difference if you’re traveling on a budget!

17. Vichy, France

I couldn’t put this post together without sharing my own study abroad city – Vichy, France.

If you’re new to Periodic Adventures (heyyy 👋), I was student for a LONG time and studied Chemistry, but minored in French. For my study abroad experience, I visited CAVILAM, a French language learning institute in Vichy, France.

If you’re into learning French no matter your current language, I can’t recommend CAVILAM and Vichy enough. The program helps you become immersed in the French language where you stay with a homestay family, participate in cultural activities, and take day trips for local sightseeing with tours all led in French.

Vichy itself has some of the nicest people who are well aware that the town is populated by international students learning French, so they don’t do that thing where you say something in French and then they speak back to you in English. Nope! They’ll try to let you learn, which is so refreshing!

Vichy is known for being a prominent city in World War II as the opera house was made to be a Nazi base during the war. You can visit the Opera today for a show and to learn a bit about its wartime history.

The town is also known for their Vichy water, a natural (salty, and slightly fizzy) water that is said to have healing properties and is found in fountains all over the city.

Finally, Vichy has some relaxing river-front beaches, walkways, and parks so you can have a break from your studies. They even have boat racing and other events on the river throughout the year.

18. Brno, Czech Republic

Ranked among the ten best student cities in the world, Brno is a lively city with a lot to offer.

The second-largest city in the Czech Republic, Brno is the vibrant capital of South Moravia, a region of unfathomable natural beauty, known for its superb wine.

As a student in Brno, it’s easy to explore this region that’s often dubbed the Tuscany of the Czech Republic. Thanks to its amazing location in the heart of Central Europe, Brno is the ideal base from where to explore not only the Czech Republic, but also several other nearby countries, such as Austria, Slovakia, and Poland.

Home to 13 universities, Brno hosts up to 80,000 students during the academic year. For this reason, it’s no overstatement to say that the city is re-designed to cater to the needs of college-aged people.

One of the best study abroad destinations in Europe is Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

One of the best perks of Prague is how inexpensive the city is – perfect for students on a budget. You can get delicious meals for around $5-8 USD at your average restaurant, and drinks are even more inexpensive – think a liter of beer for around $2 USD! It’s so cheap, it’s almost dangerous.

Beyond how inexpensive it is, Prague is also a prime location within Central Europe, making it easy to zip away to other European cities for a weekend break. You can easily visit Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Dresden, and Berlin with just a quick and comfortable train ride!

Good things to do for college students include spending a day in Prague exploring the city’s many museums (The National Gallery for fine art; DOX for contemporary art), enjoying high culture at a low price with cheap opera and ballet tickets, and spending time in cool, alternative neighborhoods like Zizkov, Karlin, and Holosevice.

20. Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland is an incredible place to study abroad, thanks to its thriving nightlife, boundless outdoor adventures around the city, and ease of meeting and befriending locals.

There’s a number of colleges in the city, such as Reykjavik University and University of Iceland. Unsurprisingly, there’s also plenty of young people in Reykjavik, with the total median age hovering at just 37 years old and endless activities in the city to explore. 

While Iceland is infamously expensive, there’s opportunities to enjoy Reykjavik’s vibrant nightlife scene on a budget, like stopping at the happy hours at Lebowski Bar, themed after the cult classic movie, or Slippbarinn, an upscale cocktail bar with awesome deals. Plus, the majority of Icelanders speak excellent English so if you don’t happen to speak Icelandic, you’ll still get to mingle and meet local friends.

Reykjavik has plenty of deals if you look hard enough, but the real reason to study abroad in Reykjavik is to have easy access to the incredible landscapes that surround the city—and best of all, almost all of them are totally free!

21. Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Albert-Ludwig Universitaet is located in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. The fifth oldest university in Germany, it’s among the country’s top ten most prestigious universities today.

Freiburg im Breisgau is idealically situated in the Black Forest area in Baden-Württemburg, the south western corner of Germany. Just an hour from France and Switzerland, it’s perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Plus, its southern location and cobblestone streets dotted with potted palm trees give the city a bright and warm Mediterranean feel.

A beautiful, vibrant, thriving metropolis in northern Germany, Hamburg is the perfect study abroad city. With its numerous neighborhoods—from eclectic with a younger vibe to tree-lined streets full of high-end restaurants and cafes, to newer areas right on the Elbe—there’s so much to explore beyond the university area.

Hamburg is a livable city, not a tourist destination like other popular study abroad locations. That means you won’t spend your days dodging vacationers!

If you love history, culture, cuisine, or art, Florence, Italy, is one of the best cities to study abroad.

As the birthplace of the Renaissance, you’ll be surrounded by some of the world’s most famous artwork.

Where to Study Abroad in the Middle East

25. Amman, Jordan

For students who want a study abroad program that’s further off the beaten path, Amman could be the perfect choice.

This relatively safe city in the Middle East is known for being more socially liberal than many of its neighbors, and there are several study abroad experiences for students to choose from. If you can, stay with a host family to glean the most insight you can into the local culture. 

The food in Amman is amazing and generally very affordable, especially if you stick to the local cuisine. Students can enjoy visiting several UNESCO World Heritage sites, learning and practicing the Arabic language, and experience local customs and traditions. From the Roman ruins from 2 AD in the city center to the world-famous wonder of Petra, there are marvels to enjoy throughout the country. 

Jordan is a much less expensive place to study than, say, western Europe. Students will rely mostly on taxis to explore the city, which gives a sense of freedom and independence even if you’re staying with a family.

Nearby attractions like Ajloun and Wadi AlMujib are relatively easy to access from the city, even without a car. 

Before you go to Jordan, spend some time mentally preparing for the experience because it may feel intimidating. Be sure to learn at least a few key phrases in Arabic and familiarize yourself with some of the basic local customs. While you’re in Amman, try your best to connect with the locals – they’re generally very friendly and welcoming to students who want to learn about their language and culture.

26. Accra, Ghana

For students looking to go somewhere different for a study abroad experience, consider the University of Ghana in Accra. There are so many reasons to choose to study in Ghana that any potential culture shock is totally worth it.

The University of Ghana was founded in 1948 while the country was still a British colony. It is one of the top universities in West Africa and attracts lots of students from the region and abroad. While the school is not as academically rigorous as schools in other regions, and its library is full of outdated books, you will still learn so much from this unique study abroad experience. 

In terms of things to do, markets are lots of fun and great value if you bargain hard. Oxford Street in the Osu neighbourhood is a favourite for bars and restaurants.

Take advantage of the city’s vibrant coastline; Labadi and Kokrobite are two low-cost public beaches, among others, that are known for fun nightlife. 

Accra, the capital of Ghana, is located on the Gulf of Guinea. The Ghanaian coast was the final stop for many captured Africans who left as slaves to the Americas, and there are a few remaining slave castles that everyone—not just history majors—should visit.

Cape Coast and Elmina castles are located about three hours from Accra and make worthy day trips.

Ghana is a friendly and safe country overall, but after dark it’s best to explore in groups and take taxis. When off-campus, always be aware of your surroundings and careful with your belongings.

27. San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica, and the greater area of San Jose houses nearly ⅓ of the population of the country. It is therefore full of nightlife for college aged students, but also inexpensive. It’s easy to travel around the country and enjoy the beautiful biodiversity that Costa Rica is known for.

Costa Ricans are famous for their laid back pace of life. There is a saying in Costa Rica that goes “Pura Vida” which means Pure Life. This is exemplary of their peaceful attitude that translates into all things in Costa Rica. It is a refreshing change of pace for the overworked college student and a great place to study abroad for a semester.

San Jose lies in the central valley of Costa Rica, between several mountain ranges, so it is not far to take a bus or rent a car to drive into the cloud forest or beyond to the beach. Both of these ecosystems are worth visiting and very beautiful. It’s easy to rent a hostel for a weekend trip to the beach or the mountains for very cheap. 

Back in the city, there are also many museums that are affordable such as the Jade Museum, Museum of Pre-Colombian Gold, and the National Museum of Costa Rica. The country has a rich history and beautiful affinity towards art.

Costa Ricans are also incredibly friendly, and while many of the younger generation speaks English, the Spanish that locals speak is slow-paced and easy to understand.

Due to the relaxing pace of life, friendly residents, affordable travel, and fun nightlife, choosing to study abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica is an excellent decision for college students. Costa Rica is a beautiful, diverse country, and perfect for students abroad.

28. Guadalajara, Mexico

Guadalajara is a great place to study abroad in university. The university town is a safe and lively city located in Jalisco, a 6-7 hour drive from Mexico City. From here you can easily arrange weekend trips to places such as Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and Tequila.

A study abroad experience in Guadalajara is quite affordable, even with weekend trips and dining out. You can find student accommodation either with a local, or through one of the exchange housing companies your university recommends. You’ll be able to find a room under $700 a month with exchange companies, and much less if renting a room with locals.

The major university for exchanges in the city is Monterrey de Tec, which is a large, private university. Study wise, there are a decent number of courses offered in English, but if you speak Spanish, there are a ton of courses taught in Spanish that you can enter too. The campus is well maintained and they have an office which organises fun trips for exchange students.

You’ll meet a great mix of people from different countries in Guadalajara. Exchange students in Guadalajara are often European, with some Australians and Canadians. It’s easy to make local friends on campus, through couchsurfing, and if organising your accommodation through one of the exchange housing companies, your head of house will often introduce you to their friends too.

Overall, Guadalajara is a nice mix of being a modern city, combined with Mexican culture. The food is delicious and there is a nice mix of restaurants and street food. Nightclubs and bars are similar to how they are in the States. Going on exchange is a once in a lifetime experience and Guadalajara is a great place to do it.

Toronto is an amazing city for international students, offering a unique blend of culture, entertainment, and opportunity. Vancouver, BC is one of the best cities to study abroad in, especially if you appreciate the outdoors and want to combine your studying with skiing, hiking or walks along the beautiful Pacific Coast beaches. 

Vancouver has many universities with the most prestigious being the University of British Columbia (UBC). UBC is west of downtown Vancouver and is surrounded by the beautiful pine forests of Pacific Spirit Park while also not being far from the sandy beaches of Jericho and Spanish Banks.

There is a fast bus line (99 Express) which goes to and from downtown Vancouver, and talks are in progress about extending Vancouver’s Skytrain (a metro system) out towards UBC making transit around the city even easier. 

Vancouver is one of the most multicultural cities in Canada and UBC is very popular with students looking to study abroad and international students completing their whole degree there. This means there is a great student community.

As there are several other universities in and near the city, there is a wide variety of student clubs for nights out and activities (sailing, hiking, board games etc).While Vancouver’s nightlife isn’t quite the same as you’d experience while studying in London, there are still plenty of bars and clubs along Granville Street.

The main attraction is Vancouver’s location to mountains, such as those on the North Shore, and access to places like Whistler and Squamish. One of the pros of living in Vancouver during your study abroad experience is that you have the opportunity to try a whole range of outdoor activities.

You can enjoy skiing at Mt Seymour, or hire paddleboards at Jericho in the spring and summer months. You can also experience some of Vancouver’s top attractions including the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Vancouver Lookout (both have student discounts) or the Anthropology Museum which is in a beautiful building on the UBC campus and full of important history from the Pacific North West (free with UBC student card).
