How to Spend a Day in Lower Manhattan
Before we get into it, I had to let you know that I created a free, downloadable version here, for easy access when youโre traveling.
Just tell me where to send it.
8 am: Coffee or Bagels (or Both!)
Start your day with something easy, local, and actually good. If youโre into bagels (and you should be, this is New York), head to Leoโs Bagels in the Financial District for a classic New York start. I LOVED how packed their toppings were. Plus itโs right next to a little park so you can sit and eat in peace.
If you prefer something cozier, Conwell Coffee Hall offers a full breakfast menu and coffee drinks that you wonโt want to miss. The best part is that itโs in an art deco building that was once a bank! The art inside is so stunning!

9 am: Financial District Exploration
Spend a little time touring the Financial District. Here, youโll find the US Stock Exchange on Wall Street along with the bull and Fearless Girl statues.

A block away is Trinity Church where Alexander Hamilton and his associates were buried. Itโs free to visit and Hamiltonโs grave is to the left of the main church.

And another block away from Wall Street in the opposite direction as Trinity Church is Federal Hall. This is a free museum where the highlight is that itโs where George Washington was inaugurated!

11 am: Free Views of Lady Liberty
Make your way to the Staten Island Ferry, which departs from Whitehall Terminal. Itโs free and will take you to Staten Island past the Statue of Liberty.
Be sure to sit on the right side of the ship for the best Lady Liberty views.

12 pm: Return to Manhattan
When you arrive at Staten Island, instead of getting off to get back on the Staten Island Ferry, get off and walk to the right following the signs for the Midtown or St. George Ferry (theyโre the same thing).
Youโll exit the building and there will be an outdoor mall to your left. Keep walking until you see an opening in the fencing on the right toward a dock. Thatโs the Midtown Ferry!

It costs $4.50 one way and you can get tickets at the kiosk on the dock or on the app (thereโs QR codes on the dock, as well).
You want to take the ferry one stop to Battery Park City.
Now instead of returning to the very bottom of Manhattan, youโre super close to Tribeca, a fantastic neighborhood to explore in Lower Manhattan.

1 pm: The BEST Tacos for Lunch
But first, lunch. Los Tacos No. 1 has a location in Tribeca.
To get there, you can take a slight detour to see the 9/11 Memorial Pools to check that off your list. If the museum is also on your list, you can add it in before or after lunch. Get tickets ahead of time here.

Once you get to Los Tacos No. 1, youโll want to try the adobada tacosโฆtrust me.
Theyโre so insanely flavorful, and honestly you canโt go wrong with any of their options.

2 pm: Explore Tribeca
Once youโre fueled up, take a little walking tour of Tribeca.
Some top sights are:
- Jenga Tower, which looks like Jenga pieces all stacked up
- Ghostbusters Headquarters โ yes the real firehouse used in the OG movie
- Philip Williams Posters โ a totally unique poster store!

- Mysterious Book Shop โ the oldest mystery specialist book store in America
- Mmuseumm โ a single-room museum with rotating exhibits (it was Rubble from Around the World when I visited), kind of like a cabinet of curiosities

5 pm: Refresh
Before diving into your evening, I imagine youโll want a little break. Take some time to refresh before your night out.
6:30 pm: Evening in Chinatown
When youโre ready, head to Chinatown for dinner. Some of my favorite spots are the handmade noodle spots.
1915 Lanzhou Hand Pulled Noodles has noodle soups and you can watch them make the noodles right in front of you.
For maximum flavor, opt for the spicy lamb cumin hand-ripped noodles from Xiโan Famous Foods. I canโt even put into words how delicious these are.

8:30 pm: Discover a Prohibition Era Speakeasy
For a unique night out, visit The Back Room, one of only two remaining original Prohibition Era speakeasies. Itโs about a 15-20 minute walk from Chinatown.
Thereโs no cover or password, you just have to find it. Look for the gate with a sign that says โLower East Side Toy Companyโ, follow the covered path with purple lighting, go straight until you run into a staircase thatโs facing you, and itโs up there!

To get there will feel sketchy, just a warning. But, once you arrive, youโll be greeted with the most beautiful parlor and bar.
The drinks are even served in tea cups just as they were during the Prohibition Era.

10:30 pm: Late Night Snack
If you need a late night bite, try Scarrโs Pizza, one of New Yorkโs Black-owned pizza shops. You can get a slice for around $5 to eat outside at their cocktail tables.
Try their Hot Boi slice for a spicy slice, or go classic with margherita. So good!

How much does this itinerary cost?
- $60 for food and drinks (estimated)
- $10 for transportation (estimated)
- attractions are all free!
- *add $36 if doing the 9/11 Museum
Where to stay in Lower Manhattan
I spent a week in Lower Manhattan recently for a conference and tried out two hotels in the area that Iโm happy to recommend.
First was the Millennium Downtown, which is definitely the nicer of the two. The rooms are spacious and the location is extremely walkable, just steps from the subway. Rates start at $244 per night.

The other hotel I stayed at was the Fairfield Inn & Suites in the Financial District. It was a points redemption for me and I chose it for its location right on the East River and walkability to some foodie spots I was excited to try (namely Funny Face Bakery).
Plus, breakfast is included, which doesnโt happen often in NYC, so it can be super helpful if traveling on a budget. Rates start at $127+ per night.

When is the best time to go to New York?
Spring and fall are the best times for great weather, fewer crowds, and cheaper hotel rates (due to better capacity).
Summer and Christmas/New Years are the two peak seasons for NYC, so Iโd avoid those.

How to get to Lower Manhattan
New York City has three main airports โ JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark (New Jersey). And luckily, public transit is quite extensive in NYC, so getting to and from the airports is quite easy via buses, trains, and other modes of transit.
In Google Maps we trust.
You can always opt for a taxi or ride share. Uber even offers a reduced fare shuttle service from LaGuardia!

How to get around Lower Manhattan
While the subway certainly runs throughout Lower Manhattan, downtown in particular is only a 1 square mile area, so itโs very walkable.
If you need to go a bit farther, subway trains 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, E, R, and W all service the area.

You can also rent bikes from CitiBike for an easy and inexpensive way to get around.
Or, take the free Downtown Connection bus that runs in a loop from Seaport to Battery Park to the One World Trade Center and beyond.
